St. Cloud officials say they might go against a new state law and continue to ban handguns on city property.
The new law says local governments can't prohibit people from bringing handguns into places where state law does not ban them. That means concealed guns will be allowed at city parks, libraries, city halls and other public buildings.
Mayor John Ellenbecker says St. Cloud already has a law that bans handguns from city buildings. He says city officials might decide to keep that ban in place and see what comes of it.
Applicants for concealed handgun permits once had to show they needed one for safety reasons or for their jobs. Now, sheriffs will have to grant permits to most adults who aren't disqualified because of criminal, mental health or safety reasons.
