BIGDADDYLONGSTROKE August 22, 2006, 07:48 AM Im needing to remove the barrel on my ar would anyone please elighten me on the proper way to remove the barrel and reinstall and which tool I need to do this.
Keep in mind im not a gunsmith I have had the gun apart several times before for cleaning but never had the barrle removed, would it be a good idea to have a gunsmith do this.

jefmad August 22, 2006, 07:58 AM Its easy to do but you need the proper tools. You need a barrel wrench and block that holds the upper in a vice. Unless you can find someone you know that has the tools it is probably cheaper to have a smith do it for you if you will just need them once.
Bulldog August 22, 2006, 08:01 AM Best thing I can recommend is to check out this link (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782) about assembling uppers, lowers, freefloat tubes, etc.
It's a pretty easy job, but as jefmad said, you need the proper tools to do it right. That link will tell you everything you need to know.
BIGDADDYLONGSTROKE August 22, 2006, 08:05 AM I will more than likely just need them once I read that some of the Bushy's were have problems out of the factory with te barrels being slightly canted and causing the rifle to not be accurate and that removing the barrel and reinstalling it is fixing the problem. seeing as how I have to have my rear sight (windage) all the way to the left in order to make accurate 100 and 200 yard shots, which is what I read some of the problems were I just check out eh rifle, make sure the problem is me not the weapon, its not very old, mabey 6 months about 1000 rounds through it.
Bartholomew Roberts August 22, 2006, 09:27 AM It would probably be cheaper to send it back to Bushmaster instead of buying the tools to remove and reinstall the barrel. Depending on the type of front sight base you have, it may also be easier to loosen the front sight base and adjust it (if you have a set screw type and not a pinned type).
BIGDADDYLONGSTROKE August 22, 2006, 10:34 AM Its pinned.
Scottso August 22, 2006, 11:23 AM If its pinned just knock pins out from left side with brass punch, no problem thats easiest and cheapest part, a good wrnch and vice block is gonna cost you a few bucks. Send it back, also where'd you get info from?
BIGDADDYLONGSTROKE August 22, 2006, 03:31 PM I honestly forget the thread, it may actually have been one I started so you can look at my posts, but I read it one THR about a month ago I dont have time to look it up right now I will when I get back from the gunsmith ( who is very expensive by the way $50 an hour plus a $35 dollar fee before parts:what: ).
obm August 22, 2006, 08:31 PM kinda late now but Sighting In had a segment on changing a regular AR handguard to free floating. it only took a few minutes to break down the upper down to being able to pull the barrel. here's a summary of the segment...it also lists the tools needed and costs:
http://www.shootingusa.com/SIGHTING_IN_SHOWS/10_GUNSMITHING/10_gunsmithing.html
i actually taped the show long time ago and to my surprise found it recently while trying to find a tape to record over for another show.
oh, and you can order their shows on DVD off their website...here's the specific show on AR gunsmithing:

BIGDADDYLONGSTROKE August 22, 2006, 11:10 PM Thank you I will definatley be checking this out, I dropped my weapons off today and should be could be getting them back in about 2 weeks.:(
Bridger August 22, 2006, 11:49 PM If you rebarrel an upper with a new barrel and bolt, how important is it to fiddle with the headspacing and how?
Bartholomew Roberts August 23, 2006, 12:13 AM Headspacing is set when the barrel extension is attached to the barrel. Assuming the barrel extension was done correctly and the bolt is in-spec, it would be impossible to get bad headspacing with a new bolt and barrel.
However, it isn't a bad idea to check it all the same; because every now and then there is the rare case of an out-of-spec bolt or improperly installed barrel extension - particularly on some of the low-budget operations.
