I'm piecing together an ar15 and wonder, at 6'3" and never a wearer of body armor, tactical vests, and other assorted apparel, do I have any practical need for a collapsible stock or will I just have it extended all the time?

I thought collapsible might be good for discreet transportation (which I would like) but it doesn't seem like that few inches of range is going to be that huge of a difference. What do you think, would I regret a solid stock?

I had the same issue when building up my AR-15.

A friend of mine, not a small guy but not our size, put a 6-position on his build-up. He needed the few inches difference in order to carry it in a supercub. I shot it, and found that the length of pull was uncomfortable unless I had it all the way extended.

When I built mine, I elected for an ACE skeleton stock; the LOP is the same as the standard A2 solid stock, and I think that a) it looks cooler and b) the cheekweld is more pleasant. Ooh, also, it has eleventy gazillion sling mount points, and since I didn't know what sling configuration I was going to want, this was a selling point.

Reasons for telestocks: body armor or heavy clothing (like you said), storage/transport, and smaller shooters. My girlfriend doesn't shoot the AR-15 that often :( , so it's a non-issue for me.

So far I think the storage thing is about the only plus I see for us nontactical tall folks, and it looks like that only makes about 4" difference for most stocks so I'm not sure if thats worth worry about.

Assuming you are talking about putting it on a carbine.

They are cheap and easy enough to change out - why not get both? If you need to choose only one, then get the adjustable one. Although they are both the same length, fully extended, only one can get shorter if you ever need it.

I shoot it fully out but my wife likes it one position in from fully extended.

I'm 6'5". I like the collapsibles because I can let my kids, other people use them more comfortably. (besides the armor thing, which doesn't apply to most people).

My next project gun has a fixed ACE stock, but it is the short version. I shoot real hunched forward, balls of my feet, aggresive stance, so the short stock works better even at my size.

If it wasn't a bushy superlight I owned, and if i didn't introduce LOTS of people of various stature to shooting, i'd get a one piece stock.

You havn't lived until you see an ummm ::looks for the high road::, a lady of short stature, who happens to be extremely top-heavy, bump fire.

Just not going to ever get to experience that with a full length stock...

The original A1 length stock is best for most people in most applications. The additional 5/8 inch that was added to the A2 stock was added to give better positions for national match type shooting.

I'm 6'2" and use my collapsible stocks out 1 notch from being fully collapsed. I don't do much shooting from the classic match positions and I find the shorter stock best for my application.

If you square off with your target you need the collapsible stock.

Even if you prefer a more traditional stance it is nice to be able to tailor your stock to fit you. The ability to go from a shorter length for a standing position to a longer length for a prone or benchrest position is pretty nice.

And with the stock fully collapsed anyone physically capable of lifting the rifle (and a couple who needed a little assistance) can shoulder it without problems.

Besides, kids really seem to prefer shooting the tricked out CAR-15 with the .22LR conversion kit. Guess that 10-22 seems a bit boring.

I have an A2 stock on my 20" AR , just got a carbine yesterday with a 6 position , I planned on swapping it out for an A2 , but after checking the eye relief on the scope , the adjustable works much better for me with the scope.

I personally don't care so much for collapsing stocks since they don't usually offer as good of cheek placement as fixed stocks. However, I am 6 feet, and have never felt a collpasing stock that was not long enough. Telescoping stocks are for compact carry. If you think its comfortable, go for it. If not, don't.:cool:

My VLTOR stock and I believe the adj. Magpul stock are actually longer than an A2 stock.

If you do any type of dynamic shooting involving IPSC-style competition or shooting while moving, a squared-off fighting stance is essential and a collapsible stock will help a lot with that.

I am 6'2" and run my Magpul stock on P2 (it is an 11 position stock, so that is a bit between the first position on the 6-pos stock and the second position on the 6-pos stock). This is the position I use for a fighting stance.

For an NRA High Power stance or prone, I will run it at P4-P5.

Another big benefit is that the AR15 is a great rifle to bring new shooters into the sport. One thing I have liked about the collapsible stock is that it allows me to adjust the stock to each individual shooter so that they have a good experience.

As far as carry goes, with two 16" barrels, I can fit both my collapsible stock AR (stock fully collapsed) and my A1-stock AR into a 36" case. Best case scenario, you might be able to get a collapsible stock into a 33-34" case.

Well, I'm 6'2", and I've got a 20" A2 with a 6 position...for the simple reason that my wife is 5'2", and she likes to shoot the AR...and, technically, it hers, because I gave it to her for Christmas in 2004. :D

Collapsible makes a HUGE difference if you shoot squared to your target, instead of "rifleman" hold.

Take a carbine class, and you'll understand this completely.

I can't emphasize the above comments on boxer stance enough. If you shoot boxer, you'll need the coll. stock.
