How to date a S&W
First of all, you want to ask it nicely.:D
Seriously, Ask us here, we'll all help, or you buy a copy of the Standard catalog of Smith & Wesson.

First a compliment and a pleasant conversation. THEN you can ask nicely. It's important to always be polite. Those S&W's can turn nasty if you get on the wrong side of one. :D

You guys are too funny and you beat me to the punch! :what:
Post the first 3 or 4 numbers of the serial number (A158xxx) and some one can help look it up. Generally it is called a born on date to keep the hecklers at bay. ;)

So there isnt an internet repository of serial numbers and date codes for S&W like Browning has....
The ones I am curious about are:
27-2 n493xxx
19-3 7k1x
67-1 95k75xx
this one seems odd to me because its pinned but not recessed
Thanks

The 67 is a .38 special. Only magnums were recessed.

27-2 n493xxx..... 1978
19-3 7k1x........1974
67-1 95k75xx....1981
FYI: in 1982 they (S&W) deleted the pinned barrel.

thanks so much guys. I'm picking up that book at the next gunshow. Does it tell you in there why Vintage S&W's are so damn addictive. I just picked up a 629 today thinking its my last Smith for a while...but I also need a 4inch .357...and on it goes
got a few more for ya
629-3
SPL55xx (not 100% sure of the first letter, could be a B S or 5)
10-6 heavy barrel
626xx
10-7 thin barrel
67xxx ( the first 2 x's are not x'ed out, thats how it appears.

Where are the S&W serial numbers on this site? I see only Colt and Browning.

The 3rd edition of the SCSW will be out in a couple of months. You might want to hold off buying one unless you can find a good deal on a used 2nd edition.

Oops, my mistake. That's what happens when you keep stuff in your brain - the relations get mixed up. Sorry.
