Anyone have one?
It has that classic S&W look with the tapered barrel, and incredible balance. And it just looks cool.
Anyhow, would it be a good choice, or should I go with something different.
I have long wanted a .357 to replace the last revolver that I sold.

First N frame I ever bought was a 6" Model 28.

They're great guns, but I truly prefer my 4" Model 28 a little more.

They will eat just about anything you can throw at them, and come back begging for more.

The only thing nicer would be a 6" Model 27. :D

I have to agree with Mike Irwin. I have handled both the 6" and 4" m28s, and the 4" balences better in my hand. although I have to add that both are among the best pistols that S&W ever made!

I have a 6" model 28 with a very smooth action from the Performance Center. I also have a 6" model 686+. The action on the 686 isn't as smooth as the 28's. But which one do I keep handy in the bedroom? The 686. I just like it better.

The two guns handle differently. One isn't better than the other. The best one to have with you is the one you practice with the most.

My dad took me down and we picked out a New 6" barreled M28 Highway Patrolman for me back in the late '60's.

It was stolen in a burgary within five years. Only replaced it with a 4" 28 last year. Kinda wish it was a 6" bbl, for nostalgia. But then, if you can shoot, it makes little difference in accuracy betweem 4 and 6" bbls.

It just feels like using an overbuilt platform to fire 357's, let alone 38 plinkerws.

I had a 4" 686 that I shot a few thousand rounds out of. Like an ???, I sold it just when I was getting good with it. I put enoiugh rounds through it to get it out of time.
I will agree that the N frame is a bit big for a .357, but I doubt that I could wear one out. I have progressed past the impulse buying phase, and I now want a few that will last me for the rest of my life. I think that my CZ willl last, as will my SIG. The 1911 that I just boght needs the bugs worked out, but it is tight and reliable, and I think it will last. An N frame Smith should also last long enough to teach my grand-kids with.
Thanks for the advise.
Is $300 a fair price for one in about 95% condition? I am not really a collector or revolver guy, so I am kinda at your collective mercy. I may be able to get it at a little less, since I am a well liked customer.

Greeting's Goon and Other's-

I've owned three of those beloved Smith & Wesson 28-2's;
and what a fine firearm. Each one performed flawlessly; and
was a beauty to behold. As a matter of fact, I like them more
so than the S&W model 27; as I always referred to them as
" a poor man's work gun"!:uhoh: :) I would not hesitate on
this one; grab one while you can, as they fell by the wayside
in 1986.:( Up till 1982, they were pinned and recessed.

Best Wishes,

I think $300 is a fair price, and if you can get it for less all the better. The 28's have been steadily climbing in price the last few years.

If you take good care of it, it will last your lifetime and then some. Barrel length is a personal preference, and in a 28 you end up with a fairly heavy platform. Personally I prefer a heavier gun in 6", so I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.

I just paid $310.00 for my 4" 28 on auction arms, that's with the shipping and ffl fee's.There seems to be a few 4" and 6" 28's on auction arms and gunbroker right now in a decent price range

you haven't felt a truely balanced N-frame until you've handled a 5" m-27. the checkered top rib and top strap is truely a sight to behold

I really like them. I have put this (on top of course) '78 unfired example away. I do think the Colt looks pretty cool too.

I got a "model of 1989" 627 5.5" barrel.
It's beautiful.
If it didn't function, I'd still prize it as a beauty to look at.

You might as well start shopping for a 4" version too, right now. You're going to want one.
