What kind of oil should I use on a blade that has a black coating on it? I just received via UPS my Kershaw Cyclone, w/ blackened blade. Do I need to use a special oil on it because of this coating?
Thanks, pardon my ignorance please.

That particular coating is pretty tough. Wiping it down with a little oil to keep it clean would be wise, but I wouldn't worry about exactly what oil to use. Whatever you use on your guns should do just fine. Keeping the blade clean is 90% of it.

I personally don't oil ANY of my carry blades, but that's because I use them for food, too. FWIW.

Azrael256 nailed it.
If concerned about using this blade with food -
Food Grade Mineral Oil is fine. Also works for wooden cutting boards. Grocery Stores have this for about $2 a quart, and may say "laxative" on the label.
Ballistol is another non toxic oil , and I and others use it for knives, guns and other uses.

Thanks. I've got some rotary oil I use on my trombone. I'll just use that :-p

You don't need to oil a Cyclone blade. The black is either a teflon or titanium carbonitride coating instead of a blueing or blackening like on guns. You could use almost any light oil for the edge.

Actually, this particular coating is a variation on the Tungsten Carbide theme called Tungsten DLC (Diamond Like Coating). It's supposed to be tougher than a normal WC coating. I don't know exactly how it stacks up to Titanium finishes since all the data I've found is comparing it to WC.
Anyway, hso got it. Oiling just isn't a big deal with this blade.
