As the title denotes, my crazy shootin' pard just got a Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull.

Anyone else here have any experience with this particular combo??

Fun gun.

Test your ammo/loads carefully, heavy recoil tends to pull bullets and jam the action around shot 3 or 4. Hornady is working on it.

Couldn't you just shoot moderate pressure .45LC out of it? Sort of like firing .38spl's out of a revolver chambered for the .357?

I owned one of the first of the SRH's and disliked the recoil with heavy Casulls. The hot .45 Colts are great, though. I'd prefer the Alaskan in .44 Magnum.

He has the 6 or 8 inch SRH and loves it; shoots only full-house or nearly so loads through it.

We're planning to touch it off tomorrow at lunch.

I thought the short Smith 500 mag was actually quite pleasant to shoot. To me anyway it doesnt have a whole lot more recoil than the alaskin in 454 casull. But not to many handguns kick more than the thompson center encore chambered in 308 which my friend has and who offered me $600 to shoot one handed for 10 shots. Hey it might not have been the smartest thing to do but for $600 I couldnt pass it up. The first shots hurt the most thought it might break my wrist but it didnt and after 20 min I had shot it 10 times on handed and was $600 richer. But I would gladly shoot the short barreled 500 mag an ruger alaskin in 454 all day if it were between those guns or the thompson center encore in 308 shooting one handed that is.

My birthday was on Saturday and on Friday, one of my sons asked me to go by the gunstore I do business with and pick up some ammunition for him. Whe I arrived the owner instead stuck the federal papers for buying a gun in front of me and said, "Just fill them out and don't ask questions". I did and then my family came from the back to see me open a nicely wrapped box with this in it. A Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in .44mag.

I found the holster in a used holster box there and paid a whopping $5 for it. Fits just fine for field carry.

Well, if the bear is on the other side of a 12 inch pine tree, it ought to work fine.

Buffalo Bore .454s drive a 360 gr LWNGC slug at around 1300 from your snub nose ought to be deadly at both ends. Wear a motorcycle helmut when you fire that beast with those rounds is not a bad suggestion.

BigMike--that's a great revolver there. Let us know how it shoots. My bet is the weight of the frame absorbs enough of the .44 recoil to make the whole thing work.

Well, even though my hunting buddy SHOOT1SAM couldn't make it out to de-virgin my .454 Alaskan I figured I ought to put right around 35 - 40 rounds of my reloads thru it just to see what it was like, well . . . what a kick, both in recoil and fun, just wish I had bought one sooner, can't wait for cottontail season . . j/k

I would think that the short barrel would cause lots of flame but much less velocity. Any idea what the ,454 does in actual muzzle velocity?

I am tempted to get one in .44 or .454 (loved a 4" .44 years ago) but am wondering if I would really get enough velocity to make it worth all the blast. recoil has never been a problem for me but I want it to be effective when hitting something.

A buddy has one and is doing some testing for a mag article he's writing. On Friday, the Hornady 250gr ammo chrony'ed right around 1500 fps. More to come...

We talked about backing off the loads a tad, figuring that there has to be quite a bit of powder getting burned up but not really adding any measurable amount to the velocity. Instead, we might try a different powder or two, with a different burning rate to try and keep the resulting cartridge at the same power level, but more efficiently. Anyone have a suggestion? We usually load with H-110. We'll also try and chronograph the loads through the Alaskan and the SRH.

I've got a RUGER Super RedHawk in 44 mag. It is topped w/ a Bosch & Lomb scope. It is considered to be 'a brick with a kick'. It is a handful. I pair it up w/ my RUGER Deerfield 44 mag., for hunting.
