EXCERPT:

In 1976, a Soyuz spacecraft came down in a freezing squall and splashed into a lake; the crew spent the night bobbing in the capsule.

Eleven years before that, two cosmonauts overshot their touchdown site by 1,200 miles and found themselves deep in a forest with hungry wolves. That's when Russian space officials decided to pack a sawed-off shotgun aboard every spacecraft.

P.S.

I doubt that the cosmonauts had to go thru additional expensive training or additional psychological testing (ala American airline pilots) to have it either.:)

Not so great for repelling boarders in orbit, however. Remember all those Hollywood airliner-cabin depressurization scenes you've been told were untrue...? :D

airliner-cabin depressurization Speaking of which...
Breaking news right now that a Soviet-made Ilyushin airliner carrying 129 Congo police officers and their families opened its rear cargo ramp at altitude. Sucked everybody out.

If they had documented proof to go with it, these guns would be worth a fortune to collectors. Very rare and no source of new ones in the foreseeable future.
