I know I am risking ridicule by even asking the question, but is Wolf ammo really that bad? Considering buying a bunch of their 9 and .45.

I met a guy at the range who used the 9mm, but he only shot it through his Hi-Point carbine. He shot hundreds of rounds without a problem.

but is Wolf ammo really that bad? It can be. Compare a Wolf case to any regular case, and you'll see why. The different rim geometry can, and does, eat extractors.

Don't mean to be rude but this is one of the most frequently discussed topics on this board. If you do a search you can read 2567 threads that mention Wolf Ammo.
Most of them have the same people saying exactly the same thing. This thread will be no different.

I've actually used Wolf so I think I'm halfway qualified to have an opinion, as opposed to those who just repeat a bunch of rumors they heard through their second cousin who knew a guy that was the brother of a guy in India who used Wolf...:neener:

I have used their 9 and .45 with no problems at at. It does seem dirty and it seems to have a smellier smell to it but in terms of function, I never had any problems.

I'm with you 444. I spend more time searching old stuff than posting.

I put 100 rounds of the .45 through my Norinco last week. It went bang every time. I didn't notice the "smell" people always seem to talk about, but maybe I wasn't paying attention.

Seemed reasonably accurate to me, but MAN was that stuff dirty. I think if I'm going to shoot cheap .45 I'll stay with CCI Blazer.

Really dirty, bad smell, out of spec dimensions and that laquer coating gunks up the internals. I don't even use it in my russian guns.

My best friend bought thousands of Wolf's 5.56 NATO for his AR-15... accuracy is acceptable, but it smells like burning trash. It really smells awful. It is also quite dirty.

Wolf used to be a problem for some guns. Lots of folks had problems. Lots didn't. When Wolf switched to a polymer finish on the cases, rather than lacquer, most of the problems seemed to go away.

Before the change, it seemed to shoot better (with fewer problems) in guns from the old Eastern Bloc, which were designed to shoot steel-cased ammo. I haven't heard much, one way or another, about the new stuff.

Is UGLIER than I am, and more antiquated than ReloaderFred!! (Nuts! czforum has a geezer icon...) :uhoh:

Seriously, in .223 Wolf ammo can screw up a gun if you shoot a lot of it, as that greenish puke color is varnish (yes, old fashioned varnish) that can heat up and transfer to the chamber walls, and eventually a case will stick in the chamber like it's been epoxied into place. If this happens to you, the best thing you can do is fill up the barrel with carbon tet or chloroform and wait a day or two.

My chief problem with Kommie Krap is that I've been handloading for 33 years now, and I would never spend ONE PENNY for any ammo where the cases couldn't be reloaded.

If you can find Silver Bear ammo, get it instead. Instead of a lacquer or polymer coating, they use a zinc coating on the steel cases. I've never had a problem with Silver Bear.

I think I mentioned this in another thread, but I'm really happy with this "Monarch" ammo (in the green, not blue box) that's been showing up at Academy lately. One of the clerks there said that Academy had the exclusive rights to this ammo...but he also said the ammo was made in Germany (when it's clearly marked MADE IN SERBIA on the box)...so who knows. If you can find it, it seems quite nice to me. It's brass cased, and cheaper than WWB, which is my usual "standard" ammo. I'm gonna try a few more boxes and if it stays up to snuff, I might have a new "standard" :)

Some guns don't like some ammo and vice-versa.

Always try a few boxes before buying a case or more.

I've shot lots of Wolf. IMHO its generally good cheap ammo although I've a few guns that just don't like it. Either problems with extraction, or the cases have too much friction in some double stack mags and just won't feed reliably.

Unfortunately for me the day of Wolf has passed, prices have gone up so much that I can usually find brass cased ammo on sale for the same price or a bit cheaper. Last case from Sportsman's guide was $145/1000 (had been getting it for $120-130/1000 the past couple of years), now its up to at least $185/1000. They had Fiocchi on sale for $170/1000 last month so I got a couple of cases of it instead. I can pretty regularly get Aguila for $180/1000 at local gun shows.

I'll only buy more Wolf if I find it $40-50 cheaper than the best deal on boxer brass ammo as the reloadable brass is easily worth that much. I reload, but have been shooting a lot of Wolf as finding time to reload cuts into my shooting time these days.

CCI aluminum Blazer has been cheaper than Wolf 9mm for a long time around here.

Fired Wolf hardball in a GI45. It never failed to fire or eject. Bullet always come out the right end of the gun. May be dirtier than other ammo, but I don't see how it would matter if you cleaned the gun every few hundred rounds.

In most guns it will shoot fine. I have heard that shooting their steel cased ammo in some ARs is a no-no. Makes sense their steel cased ammo is laquer coated and under heat that coating can soften/melt and jam up your chamber. I have shoot much Wolf in a Mini 14 with no problems however.

I think if I'm going to shoot cheap .45 I'll stay with CCI Blazer.

I shoot CCI Blazer Brass in my GLOCKS and they like it more than WWB or Remington UMC. I tested 100 rounds of each at the range one day and found the CCI seemed to shoot more consistant than the more expensive brands. Hey at $8.99 a box cant complain.

I have shot thousands of rounds of 7.62 X 39. I can only remember just a hand full that may not have went off in the first punch of the primer. Most of them were cycled back in and fired on the second go. Very few didn't go off at all. That = 0.02 cents IMHO :) That was through either an AK 47 or YUGO SKS.

For the 2567th time, I'll say: "commie ammo for commie guns" and leave it at that!!!

Yes,but the New Enlightened KGB[or what ever name they go by] is a kinder, gentler Mialed Fist. The Silverbear .223 shoots well in my Ruger .223.No problems with it.Ah Eyess. The Siverbear 9mm is a great load in my RugerP95.Enjoy.

I have had good luck with Wolf ammo in 9mm. My Beretta 9000S and Browning HP always shoot the 9mm without any problems. Sometimes my VP-70Z requires a second pull of the trigger. The same is true for some of the Wolf in 9mm Makarov. The primers tend to be hard, but in general the function is good. My SKS's and AK like the 7.62X39 stuff. Decent practice ammo in my opinion. I would prefer regular brass cased stuff for combat.

I've shot hundreds, probably well over a thousand, rounds of Wolf 9mm ammo in each of my 9mm pistols- a Beretta 92FS, a Glock 19, and a Glock 26 without a problem. As mentioned by others, it's a bit dirtier than most ammo, but since I clean each gun after every trip to the range, it's not a problem. I recently bought a Bushmaster A^15, and bought 1000 rounds of Wolf in anticipation. The Bushmaster manual specifically states that Wolf is OK. The only problem that I have ever had is with the .45. I have a SA XD 45, and I bought 1000 rounds through Ammoman, as I have with other ammunition. For some reason, probably the polymer coating, I had multiple problems. Feeding, extraction, etc. Now, I also have read posts from other XD 45 owners who have used Wolf 45 ammo without problems, so it's probably just my gun. Overall though, Wolf ammo has done well for me. Now if I could just find someone to buy the 990 some odd rounds of Wolf 45 ACP that I can't use, I would be in great shape.

I've used the Wolf 9mm & .45ACP. Other than it being very dirty and smelly, it functioned fine. Accuracy wasn't anything spectacular, either....

I prefer to spend the extra and buy S&B. It's not much more expensive, but you get a better quality ammo---and reloadable cases, too... :D
