I am about to jump into IPSC competition and wondering if my G22 (.40) with a 9mm conversion barrel would qualify as a "production" gun?
What division(s) can I shoot in with this setup?
I understand, assuming I can use the 9mm converted G22, that it would place me in a minor power factor.
thanks for the input.
Mike

The rulebook answer is no.
The factory never offered the G22 in 9x19.
With a factory barrel you can shoot production, Limited or Limited-10.
And you, any caliber smaller than a .400 diameter puts you in minor scoring except in Open where anything goes.
Unofficial answer, put your 9x19 barrel in, shut up about it, and shoot. In 99% of all local matches, nobody will even notice. I didnt say that....

At a club match no one is going to care about your 9mm barrel in the G22. They wouldn't care at a big match either but the rules are the rules and they will be enforced. Get out there and shoot a match, no one is going to give you a hard time about your gun.
There are guys and gals that will push the rules absolutely as far as they can go, these people are why we have a rule that would prevent you from using a 9mm barrel in your G22. This is both good and bad, good in that they push the technology of the guns which eventually helps us all and bad that they create the need for restrictions. I think more good than bad comes from those looking to gain an advantage by pushing the rules as far as they can, but that is just my opinion.
I hope you will let us know how your first match goes!

Put a piece of grip tape on the sides of the slide where it says 22. ;)

My objective is to have fun and improve my shooting skills, I'm under no illusion that I'll be outshooting Sevengy and taking home the money. Before I went and put down the money for a conversion barrel I wanted to find out whether I could put it to use in matches. Sounds like in the informal, local matches it won't be a problem..and that's where I'll likely be for a good while.
thanks guys and gals. I sure appreciate all the knowledge and experience that can be found here at TheHighRoad.

Absolutely! 9mm conversion barrels are great. I just got one for my 35 from Lone Wolf Distributors for $90. I can shoot lead or whatever, and 9mm is great because it is cheaper to load for. I'd be interested to find out if shooting 9mm out of G22 would put you in the same class as shooting a G17.
Have fun!

p.s. Which shooting organization is the most practically oriented? IDPA or USPSA?

You can shoot Limited minor or L10 with a conversion barrel without breaking the rules. A G22 with a 9mm barrel is not legal in production since it's a caliber change. 9mm is scored minor in every class except open and that's a whole different game when you shoot 9mm major. Check out the USPSA website: http://www.uspsa.com/

Neither. But that is a *very* different thread/heated topic.

IIRC, all calibers score minor in Production Division, regardless of actual PF. Furthermore, mag capacity is limited to 10 rounds. There is therefore no disadvantage to using your G22 in its original caliber, except for the recoil... if you reload, you can simply download the ammo.

Will a glock 17 barrel work in my glock 22?
Is it necessary to change the extractor block in the G22 when switching to a 9mm conversion barrel?
Thanks,
Pete

No a G17 barrel won't work. The breech block sizes are different.
You don't need to change the extractor/ejector despite all the blissninnies who say that you do. I have 10s of thousands of rounds through a conversion barrel with no issues.
Now--your real question--unless you shoot open, it's illegal. It would absolutely give you an advantage and it's completely unfair to your competitors. Weighted barrel, weighted slide, and GLOCK never made one. You wouldn't be shooting that in my local match; your club may be different.
Now--load a hot 9mm and use THAT to practice and the recoil characteristics are quite similiar to .40 match loads. Then shoot .40 at the match. Cheap practice is why I bought it!
Never cheat, man. It ain't worth your integrity to win a match.

+1 to Hk Dan.
Our local clubs will "bend" some of the rules for new match shooters and extend the "come as you are" hand to get them started, but will expect the shooters to comply with the rules eventually - especially if they start scoring high. :D We have some shooters who have shot for decades and nobody even cares what they shoot - they are just good company.
I shoot my G22 STOCK with jacketed bullets for match shooting, but practice with plated/lead bullets. I also use the LWD 9mm conversion barrels for practice, but I reload to near max for practice.
When you shoot 85+ percentile of Limited using Production gun, some shooters do start complaining - I don't want any "notion of cheating" to be an issue (i.e. internal changes you can't tell from outside) :D

LOL--It's worse when ya start beating the big wigs BDS. They nearly gave me a proctological scan on my 5th consectuive "less than open" win (what they call "Limited"). They had a rule that you had to be a club member to win the match (no kidding). I wasn;t aware of the rule, so on the 3rd consecutive win listed as a loss Iasked how much I needed to win by in order to be recognized. The following month they gave me a plaque...LOL...And still listed a club member as winner...
