I was given a REM 870 Wingmaster by my Dad @ 17. I am nearly 44 now and it has served exceedingly well at most feathered game on this continent. I use an Ithaca 51 magnum for waterfowl, but always wanted my 870 to do the same, referring to handling 3" magnum shells. My 870 has a replacement 30 inch barrel (I like the swing) that purportedly is the same as on 870 versions that say "Magnum" on the receiver case. Is there difference? Am being told by friends (not gunsmiths) that my 870 will not eject a 3" shell and that if tried, I run the risk of damage...or death by stupidity. What say you, Gentlemen?

The only differences between a Magnum and non-Magnum Remington 870 are:

The Magnum models have a serial number that ends with a "M".

The Magnum receivers have MAGNUM stamped on the receiver.

The Magnum receivers have a longer ejector assembly riveted in the left side wall of the receiver.

A non-Magnum receiver can be converted to Magnum by having a gunsmith with the special tooling install a Magnum-length ejector assembly.
Among others, the Wilson company has various "packages" to recondition and refinish the 870 in which they install a Magnum-length ejector assembly as part of the recondition.

The Remington factory will also convert the gun for you.

As long as you have a 3" chambered barrel on the gun, a non-Magnum receiver is completely safe to fire a Magnum shell......BUT, since the ejector is to short, the shell cannot be ejected from the gun.

If you want to be able to shoot 3" Magnum-length shells in your gun, just find a qualified gunsmith and have a Magnum ejector installed.
