I have purchased two AKs, one at the local gun store and one online at...
http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/programming/listview.asp?CatId=2
I would purchase from atlantic again, no issuses, no problems.
you can get AKs at gunshows too.

A few major options right now:
Saiga: Russian made, come in a more traditional "hunting" stock but can be converted to classic AK stock. Available in .223, 7.62 Soviet, .308, etc. Well made and affordable. THR member Correia carries these at his gunshop, and has a spectacular sale on them this holiday weekend (was it $245?)
Romanian: good basic AK. Might need some tweaking for maximum satisfaction, but general word on the street is good. On sale at www.classicarms.us for $279 while supplies last.
Then the more expensive options, the only one of which I'm personally familar with is the Global Trades (Armory) products out of Texas. American-made receivers, very well built. They go for as low as $470 at Texas gunshows.
Arsenal and VEPR are some other higher-end brand names.

Use the advanced search function (at the bottom of the pop up window when you click on search), then search for something like "best ak-47" and choose to search in titles only. There are a myriad of different opinions out there about what type of AK variant is "best". A lot depends on you budget (AKs can go for anywhere between $300 and $1500), so if you post what you'd like to spend, you might get better advise.
About places to buy AKs (online): FBMG, Impact Guns, AIM Surplus, Atlantic Firearms.

I have and would reccomend a norinco mak-90. I have one that I have had a shoot many 1000's of rds through, over about 2 years, and it is absolutly sweet. as a matter of fact the trigger on it is better than that of my ar-15. It is alot of fun, mags are cheap, and ammo ain't to bad expensive either. they are alot of fun and really reiliable. accuracy is extremly well with mine at least for the price and considering it is such a crude weapon. it can tear out the x-ring all day at 100 meters. i have experience with romanian ak's as well but prefer the mak-90 and 91 models. you can't go wrong with either one.
