Big game rifles for varmitts?

It seems the chief complaint of using big game rifles on small games is meat/Fur destruction. I was thinking of using mil surplus FMJ non-expanding ammo for this purpose. It seems like you'd get all the ballistic advantages of heavy bullets with a reasonable SD, without vaporizing your target. Also milsurplus ammo is cheap and you'd get more practice with your big game rifle.
Thanks for your thoughts/ideas

The problem is that you have a projectile that will travel for miles and miles if you don't have a solid backstop.

The concern about a ricochet is valid.
Actually, a big game bullet on a varmint doesn't do all that much damage compared to a high velocity lightly constructed varmint bullet with explosive expansion. The ground hog I shot with my 30/06 didn't have that big of an exit wound.
