While in the Marine Corps I used a Mossberg 590 and liked it, but I was wanting to know if there's anything comparable that might be better or cheaper. Home Defense would be it's primary function. I got my Mossberg Persuader NIB at the gun show for $236+tax. Great price as far as I am concerned... and you already know the Mossbergs. I hear the new Benelli Nova Pumps are pretty good and are around the $400 but have no experience with them. Then there is the Rem 870 but the are more expensive than the Mossbergs. From what I remember at the gun shows you can get one around the $400+.

A 590 would be a good choice since you have used one already

I would buy a Rem 870. Just be sure to buy one with 3" chambers, not 3.5. The 870 is the most readily customized, and they have the most parts available. I know a guy that is selling the black synthetic 870's for $290 NIB.

Yeah definetley go with the 870, can be customized to meet just about any need, very reliable, and you can find used ones in good condition for well under $300.

Best bet IMO is to stick with the 590, since you know the chops already. They aren't so expensive as to be prohibitive new, and if so used ones turn up from time to time. I've even seen some LE trade-ins from a couple of sources.

Much as I like the 870, the 590 is a darn good shotgun and you've trained with it.

Something I should mention is that you can get a used 870 or a used 500/590 for under 200 dollars at a show or a shop with good prices. I bought my 870 for 180 bucks.
