I think it is as much fun as watching a demolition derby. I could read the multiple threads and thousands of posts and still not know what the hell is going on. Sometimes ther threads go off somewhere.................

I still love to read them though.

A hornet's nest if there ever was one. :D

Ok, there's another equally intense debate topic: 1911 vs Glocks and other variants and combinations.

Totally enjoy participatng in them... :D:D:D

What do I think? Good to sell magazines. Me, I liked that last issue of SWAT. Great interview with Niel Morris. Can't wait for the 2nd installment. It's the stuff that The Tactical Rifle use to have before it became The Accurate Rifle.

Just wait until the new .50 S&W comes out at the SHOT show in February... then we can have a .41 Magnum vs. .44 Magnum vs. .45 Colt vs. .454 Casull vs. .475 Linebaugh vs. .480 Ruger vs. .500 Linebaugh vs. .50 S&W thread!!! I got your 9mm. vs. .45 ACP thread right there! :neener:

I think it's interesting that everyone seems to have a strong opinion on which is 'best' though very few have really have any first hand experience on what really works best.

Having said that, of course, there are lots and lots of people that know exactly how well the 45 ACP works when launched from the 1911A1 platform. ;)

I like the 9mm, and the 45, and will carry either.

But I know in my heart the debate over which is better ended in 1911.

I like the debates.

Sometimes they're interesting, and I never feel compelled to keep reading when they're not due to some insane hope of finding a "new" fact buried deep down in them.

I am pretty sure that if I was shot twice in the chest with any of the three:

9mm - .40S&W - .45ACP

I would fall over and not get up on my own:D

So what is the debate about??

HS/LD

BTW I carry .40

Wow my first post and I am sure this will end all debates. Go with the one that you can hit your target with. My summer carry gun is a walterppks 380 and my winter gun is a colt gov 45 .

I'm happy as long as the guy next to me is packin heat. Doesn't matter what caliber or type of weapon. Just that he has one.

I was at the gunshop the other day and a guy was buying a NAA mini .22 revolver. Me with my .45 on my hip almost blurted out.."Whatcha going to shoot with that little thing?". Instead I hushed up and commented on how neat those things were.

At least he has the presence of mind to carry one.

And well..of course .45 is better. For me that is.

Inexpensive entertainment, and much better than watching TV. Every once in a while, a nugget of information surfaces, just frequently enough to keep me "tuned in" to the topic...

I think its designed to get people to buy guns and ammo of various calibers.

I also think dove season was inspired by shotshell mfgs to sell shotshells.

I think it shows that the person asking the question has just begun their journey into the world of defensive handguns. Nothing wrong with being a newbie, but it does show that one is a newbie.

Better than the AR vs Mini 14 threads, but definitely not as much fun as the SHTF .223 vs .308 rifle threads. That one gets all the kooks out to play.

Here's what I think:

9mm: I don't want to be shot with one.

.40S&W: I don't want to be shot with one.

.45ACP: I don't want to be shot with one.

To answer the question, I think these arguments are quite bemusing.

Love the tanks and the Battleship.

As for the caliber argument it is a waste of web space.

Threads I usually avoid:

9mm vs 45 ACP
357 vs anything.
Auto vs Revolver
Ford vs Chevy or any combination of makers.
Single Action vs Double Action, revolvers or autos arguments.

It's the same old argument over and over. All of us has our preferences.
My preference is to be armed when I need to be. IF I have my choice I will pic a XXXX in a YYYYYY rather than a ZZZZ in a WWWW.

Other than the pics of the big ordanance its boreing.
I think I've wasted my share here. ;)

Alright! Semi rimmed .38 Super can't make up it's mind where to headspace! If they had made it rimless, and a silly MM bigger in diameter they coulda had the throne. So close, yet so far.

Uncle Ethan
January 6, 2003, 12:27 AM
Isn't the velocity of the .38 super quite a bit higher than the .40?

I much prefer the 5.56 vs .308 micturating contests, especially when at least one of the participants has an M-14 fetish. Then, oh then, do we see dizzying heights of arrogance and pomposity from both sides.

WyldOne
January 6, 2003, 01:37 PM
I like them. Primarily because I know next to nothing on any of the matters, so hearing pros/cons from educated people helps.

Then again, I usually get quite confused....But this is nothing new. :)

Semi rimmed .38 Super can't make up it's mind where to headspace!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, it doesn't care about headspacing. It headspaces on the extractor, anyway! (It really does.) Load it with 125g JHP's at 1200 FPS and it will do anything any other cartridge will.:D

MessedUpMike
January 10, 2003, 03:03 AM
I someitmes read them to see people who get more bent out of shape over sillier things than me. The rest of the time I ignore them because any hole punctured into another persons body will at least neutralize the bulk of the group. Of the remaining percentage still moving thing will be more interesting than what caliber gun I'm using. I do find the "size doesn't matter" argument sometimes foisted on us by the 5.56 crowd to sometimes sound like a compensation issue, but that's probably a different thread.

What is really improtant is if you can't put a full magazine into a tea cup sized target at ten yards you had better practice more and argue less. Just like anything else, the more and varied they are the more they sell. I have great respect for all but will admit that there are circumstances that dictate a particular specimin as being preferable.

.40 -- for blowing up your gun
.45 -- for getting serious

Load it with 125g JHP's at 1200 FPS

That's it? 9x19mm can do that. 9x19mm NATO loading is a 124grn bullet at 1200 feet per second.

Georiga Arms makes this load. They also make a nice .38 Super load; 147 grains at 1200 feet per second!

Well, I didn't want to post my 160 grain RNL at 1300FPS cause someone might copy it and blow up their Colt copy!:D

TexasVet...

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, off arguing JBT vs. Peace Officer in other threads (makes the caliber debate quite enjoyable again!). Re: headspacing off the extractor. 10MM can do that too. All you gotta do is load with .40 S&W brass. I can throw at least 40 grains more lead and still hit 1300fps, which has gotta hurt more.

Waste of time.

22LRs, have probably killed more men and critters than any other round.

Unfortunately, ego and machismo, dictates what caliber young men buy as their first gun.

I can't count the times I have ran into weenie boys in the desert toting a Ruger in 44 (((MAGNUM))).

I'll bet a lot of dudes, got a Ruger 44 (((MAGNUM))) buried in the back of the closet or gun safe.

Elmer Keith taught me (not in person) the .44M is a great caliber and one of the most accurate. I reload because it's no fun to rattle ceiling tiles and set the sagebrush on fire with every shot. Let the weenies have their fun, too.

I had a ton of 44 mag brass laying around, so I had to buy one.

But sure in hell wouldn't be my first choice for a gun fight.
