After a lot of years I ran out of powder. When I started checking my old sources, I found that all they carried was the substitute stuff. I prefer the real stuff. But no where I have called in the state of Michigan seems to carry it anymore. Anybody know where I can get some without outrageous hazmat fees associated with mail order?

Michigan is such a huge state, where are you? The one place around here that sells BP charges about $22 per lb., while from Grafs, I believe that you can get 3 lbs. for about $56 delivered. Figure in the price of gas to drive to pick it up from where you live. (Grafs' powder is Schutzen)
It costs about $300 for a license to sell black powder, so local dealers have to pass on that fee especially if they don't sell much volume.

In Grand Rapids you can get all granulations of black powder from Rylee's hardware.

In Hastings, Bob's Gun and Tackle also carries BP.

Thanks for all the help. I'm in Midland but have friends who travel a bit and will hit one of those places before long.

How about Jay's in Clare? The Gaylord store had Goex early in the summer and is usually very well stocked. I know Frank's in Linwood doesn't have any. The Cabela's in Dundee might, but it's iffy as they are often out of stuff that's not wildly popular. Finally, Bass Pro Shops at Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills (I-75 exit 84) is a slightly better chance than Cabela's, but not a very likely one.

I checked Jay's in Clare - nope. Most shops have gone for the substitutes which I've never tried as yet. May have to someday at the rate things are going.:cuss:

Just found out that Duncans Outdoors in Bay City has BP in all granulations at about $15/lb. So for a 20 mile drive, I can get it locally which I prefer. Thanks to all who replied. I am going over this week for a couple pounds.
