This is my second year hunting, but the first year that I will be going for a moose:D I was wondering the pros and cons to different grains for my 30-06. Is it better to go 150, 165, or 180???
Thanks

I would probably go for 165 grain bullets.

for moose i'd run 180's. for everything else, 165's.

Go with the 180gr bullets, something like a Failsafe, Interbond or such. Everything smaller can do with 165-168gr semi-jacketed. For things bigger than moose, 220gr premiums or solids. My opinion.

For moose i use 156grn Norma Oryx in 7x57R or 150grn Nosler partition in the .308. But i am going to try the 180grn Norma Oryx in the .308 this year

Any good 165 grain hunting bullet will do nicely for moose. So will 150's or 180's, but the 165 seems to give the most consistent accuracy. You don't need big heavy or premium bullets for moose.

i use 165's on whitetail - moose i think 180gr would be where i start. just my take though, i'm speaking as a non-moose-hunter, i certainly want to so i pretty much know what's going with me when the money appears out of thin air :D. they make bigger but you're going to loose the '06's reach with the compromise in velocity, and a lot of them are older bullet designs like the core-lokt (still gets the job done if you do you part though). i know remington and federal (my two fav's) both load premium, ballistic-tip 180gr cartridges for the 30-06. way to go with old faithful too, too many people think you need a magnum cartridge for anything bigger than whitetail. make sure you give us a picture of your moose to spite the disbelievers ;)

For mixed bag hunts 165s are a good compromise. Specifically for moose I use 180s. Either will do the job well if you do your's.

I posted a similar question a few weeks ago in preparation for my moose hunt. I ended up going with 175gr NP out of my 280 Remington. They seem to shoot consistently well at 100yds. I'll be hunting in Maine in 3 weeks, good luck and don't forget to post the pix!

I think it would depend on what subspecies your hunting but the most common weight that we used in Wyoming was 165 grain aught six or a lot of times a 150 grain 270 but Shiras are the smallest of the sub-species. I imagine that a Western Canadian moose would be similar, just get a good bonded or partitioned bullet. The main reason for sticking with the lighter weight bullets was to eliminate the need to re-sight the gun in. If you were going after the Yukon sub-species I would go with the 180's but I really don't know where there range ends but seeing a several in Alaska they are definitely larger then the critters we had growing up in Wyoming.
