PressCheck September 13, 2006, 03:09 PM The "Search" function is your friend. Fly320s September 13, 2006, 08:06 PM Yep, there are many pages of Front Sight threads. The short version: training is good; facilities are spartan, but acceptable; don't pay retail - find a FS certificate on Ebay or similar; you may get a hard-sell approach to buying into the FS community or other things. Try to ignore the bickering about Scientology. I went to a 4 day defensive handgun course in 2001. The training was excellent and I feel that I got my money's worth. nplant September 13, 2006, 08:34 PM Definitely use the search function to look up other existing reviews. I'm a member of Front Sight, a long time student, and a part time instructor. I have not been to any of the other nationally known shooting schools. Why? Biggest reason is that I like the way the basic courses are run. You are treated like a regular person learning about guns. If you're already very high speed, then the basic courses will seem like you're waiting for the fun to happen. Once you get past the basic courses, the instruction is much more difficult to get right, and at the highest levels, extremely challenging. Front Sight offers a large selection of handgun courses, which take you from rank beginner up to a master level. There are also the tactics courses for handgun, which, although not quite as challenging as a Handgun Combat Master course technically, are much more challenging than a regular "range-mentality" course offered elsewhere. The emphasis in the tactics courses is on staying alive, and not doing the wrong thing. In a range-mentality type course, the emphasis would be on technique and speed vs. accuracy. I think you'd have a great experience there (everyone I've brought there has), and you have the menu of classes to keep you busy for a long time, if you so choose. The Scientology thing is, at best, hearsay, and the Founder/Director Ignatius Piazza doesn't take kindly to people accusing him of being associated with Scientologists. As someone who has been on both sides of the facilities, I can say that never once has anyone ever asked me to look into Scientology or join it, and if anyone ever did, I'd be done in a heartbeat. As for the "hard-sell" yeah, just be aware that they are funding the building of the facilities with cash, and that means that they're always looking for a new member to drop some dough. My advice on this topic is this: IF you think you would benefit from a membership (they're not for everyone), AND you feel that the value of the training is at least as good as the price you will pay for the membership, THEN go for it, and don't look back. It seems that every year since I bought, the prices have dropped. I considered the price I paid a bargain then, and just because they've gone down doesn't mean that the value of the training is any less. If you live nearby, even better - the more you attend courses, the cheaper the membership becomes (relatively speaking, of course). If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. By the way, FS doesn't pay me for anything other than the classes I teach (once or twice a year, usually) so my opinions belong to me only - I don't pretend to speak for Front Sight.
