I like the Remington 870 synthetic 18 incher, but the 18 incher only comes in synthetic stock. (or am I mistaken?)

I'd lilke to purchase a durable, reliable, etc. 18 incher home defense shotgun with a wood stock.

Is it cheaper to just get the 870 and put a wood stock on it?

870 Police is 18" and includes nice walnut!

Also more common than many may admit is the purchase of a standard 26" or 28" Express model and adding an 18" barrel of the users choice. Then you have a dual purpose hunting/home defense shotty.

I actually bought an 870 Express with a 28" barrel. Bought a 20" barrel with rifle sights at Cabela's. Sold the 28" barrel on here. It was pretty much a wash on the barrels, and I got a relatively inexpensive HD gun (before add-ons like a side saddle, mag extension, and light).

Got drawn for a shotgun-only quota hunt this year, so that same gun (minus all the add-ons) will be going with me into the woods.

If saving money is the sole object of the exercise, it is likely cheaper to buy a good used 870 and a spare 18" barrel. The last plain 18" CYL bore barrel i bought was $80 delivered, from the For Sale- Accessories list here at THR. It went on a 1976 vintage Wingmaster Magnum that I found for $150 OTD from my favorite dealer. I bought a set of plain walnut Police gun furniture from eBay, $28 delivered IIRC, and that was it. $258 total plus the elbow grease to clean it all up and put it together.

Right now Remington is offering $30 rebates on new 870's. If you buy at walmart, their price is usually around $239 - $30 = $209 + tax for a new shotgun, then a barrel from ebay for under $75 and you are well on your way.

I live in the great state of CA. Can a civillian purchase an 870 Police 18" 12 gauge?

I haven't seen any in stores. I can get a regular 870 18" synthetic for 300-330.

How much is the 870 police 18"?
