Okay, here's the thing: I'm wanting a rifle in .30-06, .308 or something equivilent(sp?). Here's the other thing: I've only got about $600 to do it with. Now you might be thinking, "there's no way this guys serious", but I am.:banghead: . I would like to know what's out there. I'd be using it for hunting, blowing up pumpkins, etc. I've got a mosin M44, but After I tried an enfield the mosin was not to par. I was also looking at an M1 Garand; .30-06, semi auto, great track reccord, 550 $ from cmp. Get a no gunsmithing mount and a scope... Another is the Enfield No4. My thing is is the .303 enough? Any other suggestions would be alot of help.

I know that I've seen them for around $400.00, and you can probably find them cheaper. They also come with a 3 shot 1.5" guarentee.

There are ten grillion used 30-06's out there in excellent shape for under 400 bucks. If money is really tight, find a used Savage 110, spend 200$ on a scope, and you'll still have 150 bucks for ammo.
I just got a beautiful older Remington 700 ADL for 350 off an auction site (okay, plus 50 bucks when shipping and transfer fee are thrown in).
If you must go new, you still have lots of choices. $600 will buy a lot of hunting rifle; just don't spend so much on the gun that you skimp on the scope, 'cause if you do, you'll never know how good the gun can shoot.

I bought this Savage package (http://www.savagearms.com/11fxp3.htm)in .308 last year for about $400. (came with the AccuTrigger, a synthetic stock and mounted with a 3-9X40 Simmons scope. Great shooting rifle.
The scope was nothing to write home about but it performed OK for me on my hunting trip to NC. I replaced it this year with a Nikon scope.
You might want to do the same thing ... get a package like this and replace the scope later when you have more funds.

I don't know that I'd want to hunt with a Garand, but they're great rifles. They're also in your budget, and everyone should own at least one, so get one from the CMP for $550 while you still can. Now if you want a good hunting rifle the Savage/Stevens M200 is a bargain at uner $300 at the big stores like Academy, Sportsman's Warehouse, etc; and Wal-Mart sells plain jane Remington 700s in the mid 300s. That still leaves you with more the $200 or so it cost for Burris Fullfield II or Leupold VX-I Scope in 2-7x40 or 3-9x40, any of which are great all around scopes. So, nope, you're not crazy, $600 is plenty to do what you want.

Thanks. I'm glad there are so many possibilities, now which one...?:scrutiny: Is .308 hard to find, of really expensive? I know there's a lot of .30-06 floating around for cheap, though it's corosive, I'm starting to really like the idea of that savage...
