I recently picked up a WW2 Inglis Hi-Power; made in August, 1944. Previous to now, I'd never paid them much attention.

What is the correct pronunciation of "Inglis?" My Scots upbringing tells me one thing and my US education another.

Ing-Liss
Ing-Lees
Ing-Eyes
Eng-Liss
Ang-lees

Somebody help me! :D

Hi Jack, I lived in "The Great White North" for 18 years, and was a member of several gun clubs around Victoria and Vancouver, BC. I NEVER heard it pronounced any other way than ING-LISS. Emphasis on the first sylable - by the way.

They're a great gun. Here's mine, which was a Valentine Day gift from my wife a couple of years ago. 45Broomhandle (another Jack)

(Shouldn't PHONETIC be spelled the way it's pronounced?)

In Scots Gaelic, the final s would be pronounced "sh" because it is preceded by a slender vowel (i and e, as opposed to a,o, and u which are broad vowels)

I'm not sure where the word Inglis comes from, unless it is a Gaelicized version of "English"

The proper Gaidhlig word for the English langauge is Beurla, and the word for English people would be Sasanach

That's probably a lot more information than you wanted to know :p

Latha math :)

Evidently you missed the point that I lived in Canada. I thought my mention of Victoria (the BC Provincial Capitol) and Vancouver (the largest city in the Province of BC) - plus the initials BC for British Columbia - usually is enough of a clue that the country was Canada.

The word Inglis - in this context, speaking of the John Browning-designed 9mm High Power pistol - comes from the name of the Canadian manufacturer, John Inglis Co., which furnished these guns during WWII.

"WWII" are the initials and Roman numeral most of us use to indicate the World War 2 era - which for we Americans was 1941 to 1945.

CH in the serial number of the Inglis HPs indicate the gun was built for the Chinese during the war. (Somehow the I didn't show up in INGLIS in the above phote, but it IS there.)

And that's probably a lot more information than you needed. 45Broomhandle

how do you pronounce Unertl? Sauer? Leupold? The full name of AK?

Unertl - U-NER-TUL (not sure if that's right or not.)

Saeur - SAWR (Again could be wrong)

Leupold - LOOP-HOLD

Avtomat Kalishnikov - OV-TA-MOTT KAW-LEASH-NEE-KOV (And once again Leupold is the only one I'm really sure of.)

At my age I have trouble with small type. If you too suffer with this, TRY THIS TRICK. Hold down your Ctrl key and roll the wheel in the center of your mouse. Works for me, and I hope it does for you too. 45Broomhandle

The ORIGINAL Shansei are quite rare and VERY expensive. Mine is one of the more recent imports, supposedly manufactured at Shansei. Some of these are poorly crafted. I was LUCKY and got a beauty. They're still relatively expensive at over $1,000 a pop. There's new reproduction gear made for them because all the regular C96 gear just won't fit these cannons.
