I'm the moderator of 10mm-L, a mailing list dedicated to any firearm that shoots 10mm AUTO ammo as well as related loading and accessory information. I'm new to TheHighRoad, so I am curious as to what folks around here thing about 10mm handguns -- I can't speak much about the subguns since I can't afford one.

Best regards,

Hi!! Welcome to THR!!
While not a rabid fan of the round, I do have a Glock 29. I have, however, converted it to fire the kurz round!! :what: The reason is that where I live, 10mm is hard to get and costs as much as $20/ box when you can find it!! Mine has a custom fitted EFK .40S&W barrel as well as the stock part. 40Smith cost only $8.50/ box at Wallyworld!! They don't even know what 10mm is!!!! :banghead:

10mm AUTO is my absolute favorite centerfire handgun caliber. I handload my own ammo using 135gr. JHPs, ~13gr. of IMR 800X, and new or carefully checked used 10mm AUTO brass, preferably nickel plated. Getting the load, bullet seating depth, and crimp right is crucial. My Glock 20s and 29 will handle loads that would make my 1911-pattern 10mms fall apart. They do have a problem because they sacrifice case support above the feed ramp in favor of increased reliability -- reloaders need to be aware of this fact. Glock, needless to say, discourages using reloaded cases.

I like the 10 and shoot it from Glocks 29 & 20 ( with KKM & 20# spring) and occasionally a 1076. Load 180 gr West Coast copper plated in Starline brass. Experimenting with powders right now. Blue Dot of course, Power Pistol, HS6, AA#7, 800X. Great caliber.

....bought mine about 1990, a Springfield Armory "Omega", imported from the German pistol maker Peter Stahls. Has a 6" ported barrel (on a 1911 frame) and makes a fantastic hunting piece. Taken Mulies, and Antelope with it, one shot drops....hated to see it take a back seat when the .40S&W came out.

The Springfield Omega 10mm has a rather interesting locking mechanism that is prone to catastrohophic failure, in the experience of two people I know who have owned them. The little wedge-shaped thingy (<==technical term) sheared right off of the Omega one of my best friends owns. My other friend also had one of the linkless models and it was so unreliable (his rather extremely hot handloads may have made matters worse) that he sold it.

The nice thing about the Glock 10mms is that they have been designed from the start to handle the brute force of full-house 10mm ammo...not something the 1911 design was ever intended to do.

Mark

Well, at the links below are some recent thoughts of mine on a customized Delta Elite that (for me at least) has perfected the "form & function" of a 1911 in 10mm Auto:

Which is why you have to buy a KKM barrel for it if you want to shoot nuclear loads out of it.

The Glock barrel is both a burden and a blessing. Having a sloppy chamber aids in reliability, but is murder on brass. The polymer frame, however, is pretty strong as long as you don't have one with the serial number starting around "E"... :neener:

FWIW, the Smith 1006 that I used to have was a pussycat to shoot with full house 10mm loads and was built like a tank, and I have yet to read about an actual case failure with a Delta Elite (Good thing, too...now I won't sell my DE Gold Cup ;) ). In fact, I have a Dan Wesson Razorback -- 1911 pattern -- that is arriving at my dealer tomorrow which will be my dedicated 10mm shooter.

Much thinner than the wife likes it to be. :D

Thanks. That's a nice GC, too.

My looking around for a LNIB stock Delta for this project, and the studying and planning for what I wanted done, started about 4 years ago. But it only took Vic Tibbets about 9 months or so to do the actual work once he received the DE.

Tacblack:

Thanks. The rear sight is Novak's new "Extreme Duty" (XD) adjustable rear sight for 1911s. Very sturdy and low profile. Mine has the tritium dot night sights. The front sight is also a tritium dot. (Novak offers his XD sight in plain "target" black and white dot).

If you click on the first link above, following the write-up is a list of "specs" that details the parts used and work done.

I have a Glock 20. It's a GREAT pistol. Soon, I will have the necessary barrels to shoot .357 SIG and .40 out of 'er and that will not suck. I think some of the appeal of the 10mm is the ability to do just that: swap barrels and shoot other cartridges. Some feel that the G23 is the most versatile Glock. I disagree. I think that the G20 or G29 is more versatile.

Hey Mark G, welcome to THR. Always glad to see another Hoosier on here.

While I don't own one currently, I have always been a fan of the 10MM. Especially, the original "hot" Norma loads.

Mark,
Glad to have another 10mm fan around THR! While I've never been able to shoot GLOCK's as well as 1911's, if I were to ever get another GLOCK, I probally would pick a G20 for the cartridge.

I'm currently on my 3rd full house custom 1911/10mm project. This one was built from the ground up to handle full house hunting loads, and remain in a practical sized[my perspective] handgun. It consists of....

WILSON Frame
CASPIAN barstock slide
WILSON ramped, bull barrel[took a .40 barrel and reamed the chamber]
various machined, heat treat, super tuff internal goodies, to include the now famous, Richard Heinie recommended, EGW square bottom firing pin stop.

Everything is fitted nice, tight, and square. 8 round mags with WOLFE extra power mag springs helped alot.

The gun runs fine on 20lb recoil spring, w/buff, eating 180 gr. XTP's @ 1300 pfs + all day long.

Shoots flat, hits hard, carries easy! Life is good.:)

Enjoy THR!

Mark,

Glad you found us! There are a bunch of 10mm junkies here. We pounce on the 10mm questions pretty fast as you can see. 10mm is my most represented caliber amongst my pistols--almost exclusively in the 1911 platform. I have loved the round since it came out, but drifted away for a while. I rediscovered it last year and am getting back into shooting it almost exclusively (thanks in part to Dan Wesson). I have a Witness too, but plan to part with it soon to fund a Dillon 550 setup for 10mm.

You may want to head over to the 1911 forums and check out the Dan Wesson section. Their Razorback is a work of art--I would never part with mine. They also do the 10mm Pointman and expect mine in this week.

Gordy,

Right now I am leaning towards Dan Wesson having the best option for a 10mm 1911--unless you want to get an older Delta Elite. The latter would take some extra work IMHO to get it up to where a 1911 should be in terms of features. I just got started shooting my Dan Wessons, so not sure yet what I think of them. Initially they seem well fitted. Will have to see what happens over time.

The Delta Gold Cup is an excellent gun right out of the box! The down side of course is that they're hard to find and very expensive when you do find one. If you're looking for a good "project" 1911 10mm then a used Delta would be a good starting point. Agtman's custom Tibbet's Delta Elite is a great example of what you can do with one.

Don't buy the Megastar! They are total crap! As a matter of fact I think you should email me the phone number for the place so I can tell them it's total crap!

;)

Actually, the Megastars are supposed to be very robust and heavy duty guns. I've never had the opportunity to shoot one so I can't say anything about their trigger, reliability, etc. but most who have one seem to like them. If nothing else it would be a good gun to have in a 10mm collection and $350 seems like a decent price.

Any 10mm pistol fans out there?

David Wile

Hey folks,

I have had a stainless Megastar 10MM for about ten years now, and I think it is a real charmer. The magazine holds fourteen rounds, and with one in the pipe, it does weigh a fair amount since it is a good bit wider than a 1911. Because of the weight, it really does not buck in my hand as much as the little light weight Makarovs. Because of its width, one does need a fairly big hand to wrap around the grip.

Since I reload my own ammunition, cost of ammunition is not a big consideration. While I cast bullets for many rifle and pistol calibers, for some reason I have yet to buy a mould and sizer/lube die for my 10MM. I do, however, buy 180 grain, truncated nose, hard cast bullets without gas checks. They work real well for me and are fairly inexpensive when compared with jacketed bullets.

My nephew bought the same Megastar model in a 45 ACP, but I fail to see the point in choosing the 45 over the 10. The 45 is generally loaded to a lesser degree than the 10, and I think his magazines hold twelve rounds instead of fourteen.

In any case, the Megastar is a formidable weapon in either caliber. It is well made and keeps shooting without fail. To me, it is a shame the Megastar was killed by the government ban on further importation, and I suspect they would have become quite popular by now if they had been given a decent chance to be accepted by the American public.

As far as trigger pull goes, I would have to say they are pretty much on the gritty side like the S&W big frame autos, but the trigger suits me for my purposes. If I really wanted the best in trigger pull for competition use, I would definately consider a trigger job by a competent trigger man. Once again, however, that would also be true for my other big frame semi-auto pistols. Other than the less than perfect trigger pull, it really is one tough gun that functions reliably and packs a real wallop.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile
