Can I get an update from P45 owners?

A couple of months back there were a couple of reports of THR members with trigger reset problems on their P45s. My gun dealer has also heard "reports" of frame cracking on some of them, but no confirmation. I'm interested in a small .45 caliber pistol, and I am a very happy owner of a K9, so I want to know if these problems have been fixed or are still happening?

And can I get an idea of how stout the recoil on a .45 is going to be on a 16oz platform? My current CCW are a S&W 642, a FM 95 Detective High Power, and the aforementioned K9. I don't have a problem with any of these, nor do I have a problem with my full sized RIA 1911. I'm sure the recoil will be more, but it can't be so punishing that I won't want to practice with it, otherwise I won't be comfortable in using it as a CCW. I know, recoil is real hard to quantify and is different from caliber to caliber and shooter to shooter. I do know that I find defensive load .38s out of the 642 a little "snappy" but nothing I can't shoot a box or two of ammo out of before getting ready to move along if that gives you an idea of my tolerance. I'd probably prefer a K45 if that was an option, even if that rules out pocket carry, but P45 is all we've got.

I'm hoping that Springfield's XD manfacturer comes out with an XD45 in their sub-compact frame size, and would give it a serious look if they did. I'm probably going to get an XD45 in the future, but think it's a little large for fitting my .45 CCW niche.

Tex, my trigger reset issue was repaired by Kahr in within 2 weeks. It's been running great since then. As for frame cracks, I've heard of one at the Kahr Club on the GlockTalk forum, but no others. The P45 trigger takes some getting used. It is a long, but smooth pull. I'm switching out the sites to Novak 3-dot, I just can't acquire the target as fast with the line-dot. I guess I'm just used to the 3-dots on my other pistols. Quite frankly, I think the recoil with the P45 is no worse than G23. The only issue here is the checkering on the frame is aggressive so I installed a Hogue Jr. slip on grips. I still prefer my 1911 commander, but I do carry the P45 (slightly more concealable).

Thanks for the input. If you have experience with other Kahr pistols, is the trigger on the P45 the same? It did take me awhile to get used to the trigger on my K9, but I'm used to it now. Ironically, it took a flirtation with a P11 for me to appreciate the K9's trigger. :)

How many rounds would you estimate you've put through your P45? Any problems other than the trigger reset, did it require an extended break-in?

The only issues Iíve had with mine were before the recommended 200 round break in period. Matter of fact only had 3 malfunctions; failure to pick up round out of mag (had 3 or 4 remaining); failure to eject (stove pipe); trigger reset. Failure to pick up round was with first magazine shot through gun, stove pipe and trigger issue during 4 or 5 magazine. To date I have over 2k through it with no malfunction other than what is mentioned. Iím a 1911 guy through and through and went with the Kahr for the weight savings and similar ergonomics, a great little gun.

Would you consider it small and light enough for a pocket gun, or do you carry it IWB?

Small and light enough for pocket carry, probably. Reason I say that, I only carry one thing in my pockets, Chap Stick, anything else drives me nuts. I actually carry it OWB, Iím a large guy with medium size ďlove handlesĒ, anything IWB digs into me. One thing I would do is file down the rear edge of the slide release, itís pointy and sharp. I shoot with support thumb forward; it got hit by the release couple times, since the modification, no problems.
