I was tempted to title this "The Official, Definitive SP101 Picture Thread," but I don't have the credentials to dub anything "official," and only the support of other members can make this "definitive." Nevertheless, if you have a pic of your SP101, please post it here! I've seen a lot of threads on this fine little piece lately, and would like to see a dedicated picture thread. Post the specs.

Mine: 2.25" .357 with Lettgrip inserts and Clipdraw added.

Hello Ken - hope all is well. It was good to read your update on your son not too long ago.

OK - SP it is then - in my case with CT grips. Not much carry use these days but quite often a truck ''passenger'' ;)

No picture. But I LOVE mine. It's my "always" gun. It's now on its 3rd set of rubber houge monogrips.

Three questions:

1. Where did you buy your clipdraw adapter?
2. Gunsmith or do-it-yourself install?
3. How do you like them-Just an OK addition, or "the factory should offer this!!"

Ben, I ordered mine directly from: http://www.clipdraw.com/. It's the "universal" version, and it is user installed. I think it's a cool concept, well conceived and implemented. I used to carry a Kel-Tec P11 with a factory-available belt clip, and this is very similar in function. Nice thing about it is that you can remove the clip (take out the screws), leave the adapter attached to the gun, and carry in a holster. I've found it comfortable at two o'clock under a polo shirt, as well as between four and five o'clock where one would normally carry in an IWB holster.

I agree 100%. I too, carried a P-11 with the clip and have been a convert since. Unfortunately I always revert back to the Clipdraw after trying several holsters. For me, a holster adds bulk to the SP101 and I'f I'm gonna carry something that thick, I might as well carry a semi-auto. With the Clipdraw, I carry at 1:00 and my SP disappears under even a tight t-shirt. For pocket carry, I just switch out the grips and remove the clip via the 2 allen screws.

Why did you get rid of the badgers? Were they uncomfortable? I always liked the look, but the price was a bit more than I want to pay(I'm Cheap). I am considering a set of wooden inserts for the factory grips. I have a set of Hogue Monogrips (rubber) that I got w/ the gun, but didn't care for for carry, which is this little guys primary mission in life.

IrvJr

Hey Gunhappy,

I really liked the Badger Grips, but they did have some drawbacks for me. I eventually sold them because although they had some advantages over the factory grips, I decided I'd rather just use the factory grips and save some money for other projects.

Here's what I liked about them,

1. Really, really well made and very good looking. The workmanship on them was outstanding. I was really pleasantly surprised and impressed when I received them.
2. They concealed well, but they also offered a good grip on the gun. I have medium/large hands with long fingers. The added thickness of the boot grips filled my hand better than the skinny factory grips.
3. The gun pointed really well for me with the grips.
4. The grips weren't sticky like rubber grips and your shirt doesn't get stuck on it if you're wearing it on a holster.

The drawbacks for me were the following,

1. There didn't seem to be a lot of clearance for use with a speed loader (HKS type that holds 5 rounds). Sometimes when using the loader I'd get interference from the grip and have to be more careful about aligning the rounds with the chambers in order to avoid banging/rubbing the grips.
2. When I ejected spent or live rounds from the cylinder, sometimes the round closest to the grip would get caught on the grip as I tried to clear the chambers. Once again, it seemed like this was due to the tight clearance/tolerance on the grip.

Overall I really liked the grips, but the factory grips are also quite nice, and even though they are a little skinnier than the badgers, they are still quite ergonomic.

I also like Eagle Secret Service grips. the finish on the eagle grip that I've handled wasn't as nice as the Badgers that i've owned, but it was still very nice. That's primarily because the eagle I handled had a less shiny finish. Also, The eagles fit my hand nicely, but were slimmer near the cylinder to allow more clearance for a speedloader. Overall, if I wanted to spend some bucks on nice wood grips, I would probably opt for the Eagle secret service because they offer a little more clearance, yet are still nice and ergomic and good looking.

Gotta go. Sorry for the rambling reply.

gunhappy
October 24, 2006, 11:26 AM
I looked at the Eagle SS grips too, but they seem to be hit or miss as far as quality goes.(from internet chatter). I actually prefer the look of the SS checkered grip and that was at one time an option, tho if I can't try it on my Sp, then I don't foresee me getting any. Thanks for your prompt and well articulated response.

I got a little bored last night so I thought I would try my hand at making some grip panels for my new SP101. I had some good ole Texas Mesquite pieces left over from another project so I got out the scoll saw and files and went to work.. This is what I came up with. As you can tell they are a little ruff. I am starting to look for other wood to work now. I think it took about an hour to do this pair and it shows.

I like (though I own only a single example) revolvers in what are conventionally autopistol calibers, and I see that both of you have 9mm SP101s.

a) Any idea if these are still made? I have not seen any among the current-make Rugers I've seen in gun shops. Were yours hard to find?

b) How do you like yours? Obviously well enough to have them rather than melt them down for spoons and candleholders, but beyond that? I would imagine that they'd have negligible recoil from such a beefy gun; is that a fair statement? Accuracy to your satisfaction?

This is on my list of guns to seek; tell me if I should beware anything about them.

Cheers,

timothy

Hi -

Here are two pictures of my new 3" .357 SP-101 worked over by Marc:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q43/Pk14_photos/SP101.jpg
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q43/Pk14_photos/SP101inMDLP.jpg

I ordered the Bead Blast package with a 4 port compensation job, Tritium Small Wonder front sight, and Crimson Trace grips. 10lb DA / 4 lb SA trigger job. Having owned a 4" GP-100 in the past, I was curious how the SP-101 would handle the same .357 loads. With the comp, the recoil was VERY manageable - the gun pushed straight back and I had extremely fast follow-up shots with 145gr Silvertips. Sight acquisition is very easy.

After a few weeks of owning the SP, I decided it was not just a bedside gun for my wife, but very suitable for general carry. Marc had one of Matt Del Fatti's LP holsters available and having had a great experience with the same holster for my CDP Pro, I bought the holster in the second picture. The fit and finish from both Marc and Matt are exceptional and I could not have been happier with the results.

Will post some more pictures later.

Cheers!

Hello all -

Here are a few more pictures. For Unisaw - the Small Wonder Tritium sight is fantastic. In customizing the revolver, Marc and I discussed in great detail the compensator and front sight work. I opted for a 4 port on the 3" barrel specifically for the tritium sight. If I went with the 5 port job, the front sight would foul after a few shots. Granted, that is a non-issue for a real fight, however, I like to shoot this guy quite a bit and the sight stays nice and clean. A very fair compromise in my book between recoil reduction and employment factors (lighting and carry).

There was a recent poll discussing night sights and lasers. I have to say, I like the flexibility of having both. Since my wife needs to be able to use it and doesn't frequent the range, snap caps and the laser are great indoor training and she is used to them. If I didn't like the CTC grips, then I would be okay with just the tritium sight. Nice clear picture in all light conditions. If you were on the fence about it, my humble observations are that you will enjoy the upgrade.

On to the pictures:

If ya don't mind, how much did that carry pkg set ya back, and also, are the ctc grips comfortable? I am not sure if they will suit me, tho I am open to opinions. I like the look of the factory grips w/wood inserts, or the Eagle ss grips. I havent tried a set of ctc grips as most of the gun guys I know are a bunch of auto snobs (as in.. why would you carry such an antique? Didn't you know only old men carry revolvers?). How do the ctc's hold up to recoil? I shoot Rem 125 gr sjhp.

Marc's work is first class - his website has several SP-101 packages priced out and even incudes the option of him sourcing the revolver for you. The price of the package including the tritium front sight was roughly the equivalent of the price of the gun! I encourage you to call him and discuss your needs - he's done several of these packages for folks and has seen just about every need addressed wth the factory weapon. http://www.geminicustoms.com/

Can you buy the CTC grips separately? Certainly, however, I had them installed while Marc had the gun and he co-witnessed the laser with the POI for me as he test-fired the gun. The CTC grips work well for concealed carry - they are hard nylon (no "give" like the factory grips) and do not tend to snag on the cover garment. No problems with recoil with 145gr Silvertips or the Speer 135gr rounds - the comp does a great job with the "whip" portion of the recoil - it pushes straight back without bruising the hand. Part of that too is the basic weight of the gun. As I mentioned before in a prior post, the laser is a great indoor training aid - I try to exercise the laser in concert with the front sight during range sessions and with just the front sight alone. I have seen no evidence in personal use of any reliability issues with the CTC grips - if you want a laser aiming capability in the SP-101, the CTC grips are the way to go, IMHO.

All said and done, this was exactly what I was looking for and I was satisfied with the price I paid and more than satisfied with the quality of the work. You can always add CTC grips later - if there is a grip that feels right for you, indexes properly for rapid fire and working in your employment environment (carry vs. concealed, vs. safe vs. spouse use), then the CTC aren't necessary - the tritium front sight is great for low-light conditions.

There is a Gemini Custom 2.25" package for sale in the classified section. If it is what you are looking for (bobbed hammer, barrel length), you can save over $300 versus what you would have paid as the first owner.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
Pk

How does the Ruger compare to S&W snub noses in recoil? I like the look of a snub nose, but the Smith .357's seem hard to control; maybe I'm just a pansy.
I guess it wouldn't matter much with adrenaline running, but I like to practice.

Nameless, the Ruger SP101 is a bit heavier than a S&W "J" frame. This helps reduce felt recoil and muzzle flip. I have Hogue monogrips on mine and this further reduces recoil especially with magnum loads.

I second the Don Hume H721 OT. I have been carrying a SP101 for over 7 years now. About 2 1/2 years ago I got the Don Hume H721 OT and wow! What a difference it makes. It holds the SP101 high and tight and it has a body sheild.

Sooner SP101 I use a "Lead away cloth". After cleaning the gun let it sit for a 2-3 days to let the oil settle. Then (using and UNLOADED gun of course) I just rub that lead away cloth on the front of the cylinder while watching TV and the black marks just disappear. Well, that's what I use to do. Now I kinda like those black rings on the front of the cylinder and just leave them.

I had a S&W M60 2 1/8" brl .357 and sold it because the SP101 just felt so much better under recoil of the .357 magnums.

bulbboy, how do those Eagles feel in recoil? I'll admit 158gr. Federal American Eagle "High Velocity" .357 Magnums absolutely hurt with Hogue Wood Monogrips (and are only slightly more tolerable with the factory grip). I can't imagine how it would feel with one less finger to control recoil...

Can anyone comment on how the Badger/Eagle boot-grips feel (subjectively, of course) compared to the factory grip?

Well, my 4" SP101 has one more hole in the cylinder... and an 'adjustable' rear sight - whoppee! Lots of QC clean up required - and a pair of light Wolff springs, but it is a keeper now - along with it's SA brother. The Hogues help - not for the non-existant recoil - but for something to hold on to. My usual loads are 96gr LRNFP .32 S&WL homebrews just over 605 fps - or 115gr LRNFP .32 H&RM homebrews at 730 fps. I have also shot hundreds of the GA Arms 100gr JHP loads - made 1,186 fps from the SSM - loud, but very little 'bounce'.

All of the SP101's share the same MSRP - $550 in the '07 catalog. Sadly, the 4" was canned a year or more ago - but the 3" is in that catalog - KSP-3231X. Davidson's still had some in the $430 range - plus s/h and dealer mark up.

PS YES! Inside and out, the SP101 is simply a shrunken GP100... or is the GP an SP on steroids? Same style of grip to trigger.

You can find the weights and measurements on the Ruger website.
I love my SP101, and carry it every day. Right now I am over at a friend's house, and it is right next to be bed playing HD gun for the night.
Mine is in .357 mag with a 3"bbl. I can tell you right now, it's not as tough as a large frame revolver, but for a small guy, this thing is tough as nails. I have shot everything from mouse-fart .38's, all the way to firebreathing-dragon killing-butt stomping-full house magnums through it, and it handles them all gracefully and asks for more. Like any smaller gun, recoil can be stout with the crazy loads, but so much better than the super light weight guns.

If you've had BOTH, can you tell me if the Eagle grips are smaller, i.e. thinner than the Badger grips? I have the Badger grips and they're beautiful but I found them a little too thick for my smaller hands and the spacing on the finger grooves felt just slightly off for me. I'd still like wood for mine but need a bit smaller. The Eagle Secret Service Grips look a bid smaller although their wood doesn't look as nice as eagles. If you've tried both, I'd love to hear from you!!!

And if you have any other suggestings on small wood grips for the sp101 let me know that too!

REB - Very nice shine on the SP!

What did you use and how long did it take?

REB
January 29, 2008, 09:29 PM
The front sight is made by Hi Viz. It is for the P series but it works just fins on the SP.

It took a while to get this shine. started by contouring the hammer to the frame and rounding all of the edges with small swiss files. Sand paper from 120 up to 600 and then the buffer.

Hello from a noob to THR.
3" .357 w/ trimmed underlug, trigger work.
I have Houge grips for range days but keep going back to the stock grips otherwise. I need some of those nice looking grip inserts I see here.
The gun looks all scratched up in this photo but it really is in good shape.

Okay lets see if I got the procedure down.107276. The plate on the left is 5 rounds 158gr 357mag and the plate on the right is 10 rounds 158gr Aguila SJHP. All shot at 7yds off hand.
Since then, 9/29, I have put about 200 rounds down range and improved my results a bit. I am working on staging the trigger and it seems to be helping with trigger control. Great revolver. Steady and more accurate than I am. Tried boot grips and Hogue 3 groove but have gone back to factory for over all work.

As noted previously the .357 was only offered in 2.25 and 3 1/16" bbls. Somewhere on the 'net is floating a picture of an SP with a custom 5" bbl in factory style of one a guy has in Australia (can't have snubbies there ). Badger will make grips without the finger grooves and other changes e.g. small hands if you contact him directly when buying the grips. Over on the Colt Forum are pictures of some Det. Spec. with grooveless Badgers. Hogue also makes grips without finger grooves albeit on my SP I have a Hogue with ONE finger groove.

Details Brand spanking new 357, first rounds fired.
Five yards (over a chronograph)

Tried 3 different powders. Bullseye worked the best and had the least amount of muzzle blast.

In 38 spl for a 158grain cast bullet using the Lyman Max load published data for this produced an extreme spread of only 5 fps, averaging (a mere) 690 fps. Shot point of aim at 5 yards. Very soft shooting.

The next best load was an upper mid 357 load of Bullseye. Averaged 1014 fps and printed ~1.5" above Point of Aim at 5 yards. Very easy shooting.

Bullet is the Lee 358-158-RF (20-1 alloy). Recovered a few from a dry sand backstop buried about 6" deep after passing though 3/4" of fir target holder. The 357 loads produced an impressive dirt splash.

I don't own a 101 although I have shot one.

I've got the Smith and Wesson 640. It's had work done on it and I'm very happy with it.

But I must say that these Rugers look so much cooler than my 640 it's not even close. The Gemini Custom guns are especially drool worthy.

I've got a S&W340 as well for deep cover. I wear the 640 on the belt.

But if I had seen these and thought more about it when I was shopping to fill the 640 niche I'd likely have gone for one of these for my heavier belt gun.

VERY NICE!

Here she is sporting her new Hogue grips--just went on today. I haven't shot a round with these grips yet but I already like them much more than stock. They have a solid yet comfortable feel to them, no exposed backstrap, nice form-fit for the first knuckle on my thumb (better than stock), and I can all of my fingers around the grip.

Now I just need to find a good holster with a trigger strap like Weevil. Anyone know of a good DOA holster? I need something I can trust to roll around in my backpack and stay secured.

It definitely tames the recoil better than the stock grips or the Pachmyar, but it is bigger and harder to conceal. That big pointy grip tends to print rather badly especially with IWB holsters.

I also like for fun to shoot the Mod. 617 but that is $917. These are very expensive. Or is it that S & W is just an expensive brand now?:uhoh:

I got a SP-101 in grey finish a limited edition with the wood inserts at 400 something:). i'm wondering if these are still available for sale? Or Where? I couldn't find any. I like this one so much I wouldn't mind getting another one.

Since the thread is still going may as well join in and keep it alive.

Moon clip modification, rounded trigger and action job by Clark Custom Guns. Hogue mono grip fits my hand and the wood doesn't snag like rubber.

Not the greatest quality pics, but all I have at the moment.

so how do wood grips compare to something like a Hogue Monogrip as far as the recoil? I would think they would be less forgiving, but ya never know.
First day shooting a .44 Magnum was interesting.. that thing is LOUD and very powerful. Not as much recoil as I thought there would be, but you definitely knew you weren't shooting a .22 :D I would absolutely hate to be on the receiving end of it.

The wood inserts on the SP-101 are fine for shooting. For me it's a cosmetic thing and I like the grey finish better. I do notice a big difference when using the Buffalo Bore .357 125 grain ammo RECOIL.

For me the wood monogrip is fine. Maybe not as cushy as the rubber one (i have one of those too) but better than the stock grip. It's bigger than the stock grip and fills up my hand better which helps with recoil.

Is the SP-101 still available with wood insert grips in gray finish? Or do you have to buy the grips separately now?
Mine came with them and was a Lipsey limited edition.

I agree like I said before I wouldn't mind getting a second one but I want the grey finish with the wood inserts in grip.

Yes those are beautiful but in my case I would prefer the grey finish.
