What is the perfect shooting AR15/M16 configuration? Please post your configuration and options ideas with a basis of why this or that.

I like the M-4 style configuration. They are light weight, the stock is adjustable for different shooting styles. The addition of a holo sight makes them a breeze for fast target acquisition and a foregrip maes them very controllable during rapid fire. All of this makes for a very fun and higly functional AR.

I second the M4 vote. The adjustable stock is nice if shooting is a group event for you it allows shooters of diferent sizes to adjust the stock to their preference. The 16inch barrel handles fast without a noticable change in accuracy from the 20inch (unless your going for MOA to the extreme). The built in rail is great for switching back and fourth from irons, to reflex sights, to scopes in a hurry. May I suggest Rock River Arms over other manufactures, the price is a little higher but the quality is top notch and that two stage match trigger cant be beat.

Really depends on what you're looking for out of your rifle, but IMO, the 16" M4 config is the way to go :) What you lose in velocity, you make up for in portability ;)

- SOPMOD (preferably) or M4 style 6 position stock
- A2 or Hogue Grip, I DESPISE the Ergo grip!
- Flat-top Upper allows a carry handle or any optic
- M4 Handguards
- Lightweight Profile Barrel, My personal rifle has an M4 prof. bbl but it's completely pointless. :)
There you have a light handy carbine with an adjustable length of pull. What more could you ask for?
My next rifle will be something as I've described here.

M-16 A2... Because if I wanted the AR to look like something out of Starship Troopers, I'd buy an FN 2000. And standard sights are fine by me. Optical ones mess with my eyes.

Something that runs all the time.:) My tastes run Spartan compared to the usual Walter Mittys that show up at carbine classes however past few years I have actually gone to optical sights (Aimpoint MLII).
stock--Sully (I am not paid by Sully, although I am willing to star in an ad:D), prefer fixed stocks, more comfy and less slipping;
grip--I use TangoDown, lots of others, no gap for ouchie finger blisters;
charging handle--PRI, like my face and eyes;
sling--CSM single point, like the cut away option;
receivers--I like Rock River, but Colts will work too;
barrel--flat top receivers with 16" (I use the green ones from RRA);
flash suppressor--think it is hard to beat twisty Vortexes;
BUIS--I have Troy on my carbines but at the last gun show in Indy the guys from The Malabar Front, LLC had those new spring up sights from DPMS. Really slick. Anyone use these yet???
mags--use Colt bodies with Wolff springs and self-leveling followers;
extra mag carry--still prefer chest pouch;
drop bag--like the Eagle or CSM one, do not like the thigh one, gets too heavy and falls off!
Sully, I use your stocks on all my set-ups, excepting the standard old Colt ARs I have. Thank you very much.:)

I'll be better qualified to answer this in December when I get out of basic, but right now, I don't understand the shorter barrels. Small bullet dependent of velocity for both fragmentary effect and long range accuracy--I want that extra bit of velocity afforded by 4 extra inches of barrel length. After I breech a few doorways with one, maybe my opinion will change, but for now I think if I were to get an AR, it would be an A4 style 20 inch rifle with a 4x ACOG.

This is my personal pet rifle.
My priorities have definately changed since joining the military. Now I want my weapon to be as light and easy to carry around as possible.
I like the simplicity of iron sights but but the eotech is much, much faster. I am very happy with the SOPMOD stock. I also have a good two-stage trigger installed....it makes a huge difference. Especially for followup shots as there is very little trigger reset. Everything else is pretty generic and not worth mentioning.
MTMilitiaman: I wouldn't count on learning much about firearms when you go to basic. I learned how horribly abused a weapon can be and still function, but that's about it.

Yeah I was thinking more along the lines of MOUT training, or whatever they call it these days, and whether breeching a couple doorways with a fullsize M16 would make me appreciate the extra compactness of the M4 even at the expense of velocity. I've never had to go through a doorway with a rifle and have to worry about someone shooting at me, but I like shooting stumps at 300 or 400 yards away, so right now I think I would appreciate the 20 rifle more.

Youd have to define perfect shooting. Im in Kali and new to AR's, in fact I havent even put my first one together yet...in fact Ive only shot the AR in its pistol caliber form.
Mine is the A3 setup, which I prefer because of its rail, and better ability at range. My only real concern is that my barrel is a heavy profile, I could have saved a pound if I got a slimmer profile. But its still lighter than my SKS, it wont be carried much, it will be used alot though.
Im also a fan of the M4 with the featherweight barrel, and rail. I plan to use open sights, but the option of a red dot or scope is there also.
I spend a fair amount of time on the US/Mexico border observing for Coyotes and other "persons of interest" who sneak across our state of the art rusty barbed wire fence. I know of other concerned citizen who have been ambushed...in this situation an M4 would be perfect...but it would be Kali neutered.
Whatever you pick...make sure its got a chromed chamber and bore, unless you all about accuracy.

What is a "perfect configuration"? I like a long sight radius, rear peep, front globe sight. I saw a nice one by White Oak Precision, now have to start saving my pennies.

It's no assault rifle, but should kill paper real good. And prairie dogs (may need a scope for that)
Regards.
