I've looked at the ballistics of this cartridge, and it has a lot of potential. It won't do anything that .44 Mag or .45 Colt can't do, of course, but it's advantage is that it's a rimless round much better suited than .44 for use in a semiautomatic pistol.

Ironic, then, that one of two production pistols using this round (that are still in production) is a revovler (that'd be the Dan Wesson Model 460/7460, which uses moon clips. .45 Win Mag MUST be loaded with Starline brass in order to use moon clips). The other one is the Wildey Magnum which, AFAIK, is currently in very limited production.

Anybody have a gun in .45 Winchester Magnum? What's your favorite load? What can the round do?

For a round that's so obscure, many major manufacturers still make it.

.45 Win Mag seems to be a close to ideal round for a Desert Eagle or similar hunting autoloader. Why they never made a DE .45 I can't say. I'd REALLY like a scaled up 1911, with interchangable slides (5" and 6") in .45 Win Mag. That'd be cool.

The LAR Grizzly was a up-sized 1911 and was chambered in 45 WinMag, as well as a couple of other calibers. Unfortunately, they are hard to find.

The freedom arms .454 casull can be had with a .45 win mag cylinder and a .45 colt cylinder, allowing 3 different power levels in the same gun.
Some gun manufacturers allow you to shoot .45 colt in their guns chambered in .454 casull, but most recommend against the practice.

For a scaled up 1911 in .45 Win Mag, just find one of the old AutoMags that was chambered in it.... Mark IV, I think?

I think the Automag IV was chambered in .44 Automag.

I've gotten to shoot a LAR Grizzly a couple times, and I really like 'em. They handle like a heavy 1911, except that the grip is a bit longer (front to back). Recoil isn't a problem at all - I can shoot it one-handed without any trouble. Great sights, and a good trigger too. One neat feature of the LAR is that you can have it in .357 Mag as well, by switching out the barrel, mag, and recoil spring (the one I shot in .357 was a bit picky over ammo, though). IIRC, the two barrel lengths available are 6" and 8", with compensators available as an option.

If I had an extra kilobuck lying around, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

It may have been the Mark V then...same one as the 50AE. It's a scaled up version of the III in .30 Carbine. Local gun store has the whole line in a display case...I'll have to stop by and see what it is.

The AMT Automag IV was chambered in .45 Win. Mag. I once owned one. It would not go through one magazine (7 rounds) without jamming.

Automag IV - never had a problem with jamming that wasn't my own fault. Grip was way, way to big for my hands and I had trouble getting a good handle on it. My shooting friends with large paws could shoot it without a hitch tho.


Sold it and last time I saw it a guy had put a B-Square scope mount on it. It covered the ejection port and the guy was shooting it one round at a time.

I have one of those things............. its a pile o' Kaka. It's been sittin in a drawer cause the grip screw backed out and I cant get it to go back in. I hate shootin the thing anyway so I kinda forget I even own it.

Coulda had one a few years back for a once in a lifetime price.

On another note, I saw a guy shooting a LAR .45 WM at the indoor range I belonged to. I've never seen anything that would displace as much air in my life! Every time he'd pull the trigger, the little scraps of target-paper littering the range would all blow towards the backstop,,,,all the way to the 50 ft mark! Thing didn't have a big fireball or was extra loud,, but it sure got everyone's attention.
