I have a question on the Swiss SIG bayonets that are for sale at cheaper than dirt any many other places.
How are the handel and hilt attached? I am planning to make a knife (a medieval "ballocks" dagger) and I need a good blade. I was thinking about a blade from atlanta cutlery but I would rather have a Swiss blade than an indian blade. Anyhow, if I could get the handle and guard off and just have a bare blade the SIG blade would probably work pretty well. Also, how long is the handle?
Thanks to anyone who can answer this for me.

It is a simple process. Remove the two retainer screws from the pommel, and the spring and latch will fall out. After that, the pommel just screws off. Everything else just slides right off like an A-Trim sword.
The one that I owned had the hardest steel that I think I've ever encountered. A coarse diamond stone would just slide off like glass, and even a bastard mill file had a hard time cutting it. I ended up giving up trying and sold it at a garage sale.
Good luck with your project.

I have one in front of me right now. What a great piece of steel. Handle is slightly short of 5 inches. Blade is just over 9 3/8 inches.
I saw some that were turned into knives for sale at Mills Fleet Farm a few years ago. They were pretty inexpensive. That may be a good place to start your project.

I have three, one of which was intended for and has been sitting around as a project on the back burner for the longest time. After toying with various ideas, I have decided to keep it as stock - except to give the insides a thorough cleaning, degreasing - and then re-assembly with some epoxy filling all the voids. Then work on getting the blade as sharp as possible.

If anyone knows how to get one of those sharp, let me know. Steel is incredibly hard and the blade has a tough profile to sharpen. Hell, I'll sell mine cheap if anyone wants it.
