Ok here’s the deal. I got my hands on an M44 the other day. It’s a laminated stocked Izzy that I believe is a re-arsenal. It is in great shape. I stripped it all the way down to its smallest components and cleaned out all of the cosmoline that the previous owner(s) left behind. This made a HUGE difference in the trigger pull and ease of bolt manipulation.

This modification is well worth it.

Anyway, I plan to use this as a truck gun. The problem is, I want to do some more reversible modifications and I’ve hit a snag. I planned to find a spare solid wood stock and shave it down to better proportions (as I have done on several other rifles) and to get my hands on a spare front sight base/bayo lug that I can put on a weight loss program.

I can’t seem to find spare wood stocks or sight bases anywhere! I’ve looked on Numrich’s website, on Gunbroker, all of the “accessory” dealers (Tapco, Sarco, et al) and I’m coming up with nothing.

Long story short, where can I find these items?

I've actually got a better option for you. Keep that rifle in current configuration, but go out and buy an m38 to modify. Buying a new stock and bayonet/front sight adaptor to modify will set you back almost the cost of a new mosin anyway. Plus, with an M38 carbine, you won't have to wrassle the adaptor off the rifle- believe me, after doing two of those, it's no fun and salvaging the retainer pins is very unlikely.

Barring that, I'd suggest a Boyds Mosin-Nagant stock (don't waste your time with the ATI plastic, unless you love dremeling as much as I do), which, I would note, will require a finishing job. The Boyds will be a bit easier to work with than a milsurp stock (no cosmoline), and will look better than a mod-job.

Also, if you're serious about turning a Mosin into a truck gun, I would suggest you consider a hard-chromed Mosin carbine from Classic Arms.

The 'creative' M38 1/3 of the way down the page is interesting, if you want a rifle that's had all the grunt work done for you, with Mosin reliability.
