I feel bad for the SPC Ronquillo. Having to pack a stubby saw and a long M14 must be quite a pain. :D
And that petite sailor could probably use a rifle with a slightly shorter length-of-pull. :D
As I understand it, the Navy's "official" rifle is still the M14, though in practice they issue more M16s (to Seabees, Shore Patrol, etc.).
I think this conflict will be the last hurrah for the M14. It's being phased out in favor of SR-25 type rifles in the sniper/designated marskman role.
Fortunately, it will live on in the civilian world. Nice rifle. Like it almost as much as the FAL.

Still. Something has to be said for a design that traces its lineage to 1936 and, despite being declared obsolete several times, is being used in a conflict in 2006, seventy years later.
That's longevity even the Kalashnikov can't match.

That's longevity even the Kalashnikov can't match.
Give it a few years. In 20 years, the Kalashnikov rifles will still be kicking and working like they day they were made and the M14 will be stored away and long forgotten.

I bet the AK is about as well suited for 1000 yard shooting as the M14 is for across the room shooting, which begs the observation that the two are really apple and oranges. The AK was meant for massed automatic fire at relatively close distances while the M14 was our last true battle rifle and really better suited to aimed rifle fire at medium to extended distances.
I say get both and be happy. I already have the AK, and though I wouldn't mind another, I think a FAL or AR will be next, though I wouldn't mind a PTR-91 or an M14 either.

I am agrunt and i tell you one thing i would much rather have a m14/m21 all day long, over an issued m16a4 that we are stuck with. I'll hump the extra weight that ain't an issue!
The AK was meant for massed automatic fire at relatively close distances while the M14 was our last true battle rifle and really better suited to aimed rifle fire at medium to extended distances.
yeah it's great for trenches, bunker, cqb and such in the full auto aspect, but
If the enemy could ever figure out that there is a semi-auto function to the ak, and use it more like a rifle and not a darn machine gun they might be a little better off, but the least they know the better off we are right! we will take any advantage we can get.
Give it a few years. In 20 years, the Kalashnikov rifles will still be kicking and working like they day they were made and the M14 will be stored away and long forgotten.
Though not all military units might not be using it way in the future it will still be around on the civilian market for i would say FOREVER!!!!!

some good pics of the best battle rifle............
Best battle rifle? Are there FALs lurking in the background of some of those pictures? Those sailors standing in front of some G3s? :)
Still. Something has to be said for a design that traces its lineage to 1936 and, despite being declared obsolete several times, is being used in a conflict in 2006, seventy years later.
They're being used because they were sitting in the back of a warehouse somewhere when the need for a DMR went from being academically debated to required in the field. It's quite good in that role, admittedly, but it is still obsolete as a general service rifle (and basically was from the moment the first unit equipped got their rifles).
The main problem with the M14 was that it was the best service rifle of World War Two . . . the only catch being that the war had been over for a decade or so before they were fielded. Great rifle if built in 1936. Wrong lessons learned (any lessons learned?) from WW2 in 1956, though.

admittedly the FAL has seen more use around the world, though from what I hear it does'nt fair to well in sandy regions.
The G3......again a few world armies field it but the charging handle design seems flawed and awkward to me,specially being lefthanded. The PTR rear sight is a improvement for sighting in also.
Guess some would say the Galil in 7.62mm might be a compromise, never fired one though to give a personal opinion.
Seems to me though that the fact that alot of military personel give high ranks to the M14 says something though.Rarely do you see or hear a discouraging word.
For the commercial design, dont confuse the company Springfield inc with the armourer Springfield.Though most that have a commercial Springfield inc seem to have few problems with it.Personally I would look for a older serial number Springfield inc because they tended to have more surplus parts to it.
Ive heard good things about Fulton Armoury rifles also.
I personally do not own a M1A M14 yet,I do have Garand and have fired a M14 and its on the top off my to get list as soon as funds permit.

I don't see that it's any more or less "obsolete" than a FAL or a G3. Unless you're going to argue that a pistol grip somehow equates to technical superiority (don't laugh; that very thing has been argued repeatedly on this very board), I don't think a group of 1960s infantrymen armed with a full length rifle in the 7.62x51 chambering, iron-sights-only, that can fired in full auto but really shouldn't be, is going to be especially better off with one or the other for the same level of training and familiarity.
If the argument is to be made that it was obsolete because it wasn't a select-fire, intermediate cartridge assault rifle, says who? All because a weapon doesn't fit into someone's order of battle, or doesn't mesh with a given doctrine, doesn't mean it's obsolete.
Truth be told in later years, the US especially moved away from the "assault" part of the "assault rifle" concept, training its soldiers almost exclusively in semiautomatic fire and adopting the silly three round burst trigger group. Semiauto fire, except possibly at very short ranges, is always preferable in a shoulder arm to automatic fire.
My point still stands, however. You have what is, at its heart, a 1936 design that is still being issued to front-line units and is serving admirably. Of course it's a stop-gap, and interim measure because once again, we got caught with our pants down. (The military had been debating designated marksmen for decades when the Soviets effectively had them in service during the Second World War.) Nonetheless, the rifle itself has done well, despite its obsolescence, and with a few upgrades it has become quite compatible with more modern accessories that the soldier now has at his disposal.
It's worth pointing out that, despite the crap we keep bolting onto it and subsequently declaring how shiny and new it is, the M16 and all of its plethora of derivatives are themselves a product of 1950s engineering.
But then again, a slug kills a man as well now as it did during the Revolutionary War, so firearms design tends to evolve more slowly than other forms of technology. Men's hides aren't getting any more resilient to gunfire, whereas tanks, jets, and ships are much harder to kill now than they ever were.

When everybody and their uncle makes their own variant of the design, some departing significantly from milspec and some using some really bad knock-off parts, one can hardly be startled when some of them don't run right.
Of course, some of them run very very well indeed.

Respectfully, and no flame intended, you don't have too much experience with the M14, do you?
Take one, or a standard M1A. Get some 147 grain ball ammunition, about 300 or so rounds. Take it to the range.
Now shoot away. At any range you care to mention, shoot. Use up that ammo! After you finish, clean the weapon.
Lock the bolt to the rear, flip it upside down and field strip. A wet patch, the bore brush, then another wet patch, then patch until dry. Wipe off the bolt and wipe out the mag well. Wipe off the spring, op rod, and gas cylinder. Grease the bolt roller and apply oil where needed. Reassemble and perform a function check. Done! Total time elapsed? About 15 minutes.
Now, do the same with an AR15/M16. Fire 300 rounds, and now clean it.
You will be picking caked carbon out of almost every orifice the weapon has. You will be using pipe cleaners, folded rags, patches, brushes, solvents, anything you can get your hands on to clean the weapon with.
And, you will have to clean that M16/AR15 at least once DAILY with constant use to ensure proper operation.
You can carry an M14, get it dirty, and the thing will still function after a bit of neglect. Try that with an M16.
If the M14 get a case stuck and won't extract, (and you need it BAD), ground the butt and put your heel on the charging handle. A good kick usually will set things right. Try THAT one with your M16--you'll snap the weapon in half.
Does the M16/M4 have its place? Sure. But, which is the better weapon? Without a doubt, the M14.
And let's not even talk about ammunition.
There's a video clip of a guy in Iraq, who is about to light off an RPG. He comes under fire with 5.56 rounds. There are two bursts; after the first burst, the guy is sitting in the middle of the street, LOOKING in the direction the shots came from--this is after getting HIT. A second five round burst did the job--but it appeared that he only succumbed after receiving a head shot.
Now, somehow I think that if the guy had received ONE well aimed .30 caliber round, center of mass, he would have not been sitting there, looking stupid and waiting for the second burst.
Just my humble opinion....:)

After reading an expert from Gunny Hathocks book I am under the belive that bullet size matters little, shot placement is key.
Gunny Hathock shoots a VC, with four (4) 30.06 rounds, his spotter shoots him with I think anouther 3 or 2 .308 rounds (from the beloved M14). The guy does not go down untill the Gunny puts one through his head.
Was the VC high on something? Most likely, but don't ever pull that bull about "Well if it would have been a .308 he would have went down like he was struck with the Hand of God!" How many times do you see deer go down the moment you shoot them? Not many. I shot a buck, not more then 20 yards away, lung shot, 20 gauge sabot slug, he ran a good 25-50 meters before going down. And then he wasn't dead yet either.
My .02 cents for what its worth.

I've fired stock M14s and M21s on a number of occasions. Haven't lugged one all over SE Asia (or Iraq or Afghanistan), but I'm basically familiar with them.
Take one, or a standard M1A. Get some 147 grain ball ammunition, about 300 or so rounds. Take it to the range.
Better idea. How about you and I both start 20 kilometers from the range, with 80 pounds of kit. You take an M14 with 300 rounds of ammo, and I'll take my issue M4A1 with 300 rounds of ammo.
I'm pretty sure I'll have fired all 300 rounds of my ammo before you get there.
Now shoot away. At any range you care to mention, shoot. Use up that ammo! After you finish, clean the weapon.
Again, how about we worry about the real world. Nothing past 100 meters. On a timer, controlled pairs into all targets, occasional failure drills as well (since .308 fails to stop from time to time as well, even without figuring in rounds that just miss). Single targets as well as multiple targets.
We'll see who comes out on top for both accuracy and time. Assuming you and I are of basically equal skill, I'll put my money on the M4.

Welp, you young whippersnapper, if this were 1980 I'd take you up on your challenge. I did my EIB march (12 miles/20K) with an M60 and a basic load. :what: Yes, it sucked, but that pretty blue rifle was worth it! :D

It all depends on familiarity with your weapon, and the amount of practice you've invested.
The key is positioning, natural point of aim, and mounting the weapon. Granted, the M4 platform kicks a LOT less, and the .223/5.56x45mm is an inherently accurate cartridge.
But a shooter trained with the M14 platform can get those double taps/hammers out just as fast as you can with that M4, and at those ranges, with equal accuracy. Don't forget the added benefit of penetrating cover, and the fact that at 25-50 yards the 7.62 ball round will really whack the crud out of the target. Of course, the 5.56 is no slouch--but give me the bigger bullet.

Not that the M14 isn't a fine rifle, but its pretty hard to argue, IMO, that it wasn't obsolete long before it was issued as a general issue rifle. The world has gone to the lighter/more ammo approach. Not just us, but the whole world. If the world's fighting forces were more effective in combat with .30 cal bullets at ~2900fps, that is what they would be using. But, they are not. Its just the facts.
As far as longevity of a design, I believe the US military uses Rem 700 type rifles as well, which can be traced further back than any military autoloading design, no?

If you want longevity, the all time champ remains the Mosin-Nagant. There's a heavily modified sniper variant still in use by some reserve units of the Finnish Army, although it's being phased out in favor of something by Sako (I think) in .338 Lapua.

Put a shooter in a guard berm at a traffic checkpoint with his gun trained on the cars individually weaving slowly through a serpentine traffic barrier. You have to approach the car 50 meters away and inspect the vehicle/driver. :uhoh: What do you want your covering shooter to be armed with? A glorified .22 popgun :barf: or a souped .308 with punch? Especially if Mohammed Martyr  has his brain fried on Islam and doesn't intend to stop for anything? :scrutiny:

Wow. The M14 with that JAE-100 stock is pretty cool looking. A Scout-Squad built on one of those with a little bit of accurizing...hmm.. :D
This stock is different than the ones the Estonians are using, though. The one Estonian shooter seems to have a left-handed-only thumbhole.
GO LEFTIES!
Anybody notice that in the second-to-the-bottom picture the M14's barrel seems to have been shortened?

The one Estonian shooter seems to have a left-handed-only thumbhole. It isn't lefty-only, it is ambidextrous--look at the guy in the background; the buttstock on his rifle is identical to that under the left shoulder of the shooter in the forground.
Why does estonia use M14 and G3, other than ammo commonality amongst sweet battle rifles?

I was looking at where his thumb was sticking out of the stock. It looks, from this angle, like it'd be very uncomfortable to try to fire that right handed.

Could just be the angle. Or maybe they have left and right handed stocks fitted to their snipers?

Obsolete 1936 technology?
Jeez, how wrong can you get?
By not confusing the ammunition and the weapon, I suspect I'm not quite as wrong as you . . .
Put a shooter in a guard berm at a traffic checkpoint with his gun trained on the cars individually weaving slowly through a serpentine traffic barrier. You have to approach the car 50 meters away and inspect the vehicle/driver. What do you want your covering shooter to be armed with? A glorified .22 popgun or a souped .308 with punch? Especially if Mohammed Martyr has his brain fried on Islam and doesn't intend to stop for anything?
I'd rather have a 240 or a .50 cal if he's trying to stop the car. If he's trying to kill the driver, it doesn't make much difference between 7.62 and 5.56 through automotive glass at 50 meters (and that would be my job anyway).
Give my covering shooter the obsolete 1936 technology M-14 ANYTIME! D*mn! How obvious can the choice be!?
Since your only argument is that the 7.62mm round has some battlefield utility (which no one has disputed), but you've yet to say anything indicating the M14 is an especially good platform for that round now (or back in the day) I'd say it's not especially obvious at all.

Both were provided to them as military aid from other NATO nations (specifically us and the Germans).

I greatly prefer the look of most rifles in their natural configuration, and the M14 is no exception... I think it looks a lot better with its original wood stock than in any pistolgrip configuration.

me too...wood is the only way to go...also, make mine a Garand. Nice thing about wood...it has beauty and, once one has run out of ammo, you still have a weapon...with or without bayont.

Give it a few years. In 20 years, the Kalashnikov rifles will still be kicking and working like they day they were made and the M14 will be stored away and long forgotten.
-----------------------------------------
I saw this on the History Channels' Tales Of the Gun, The AK47 : There was a rifle fully developed that was slated to replace the AK, but IIRC it all took place right around the time the Soviet Union collapsed and it never went through. If Russia is still using the AK in 20 years it is only because they dont want spend the money(or dont have the money) to manufacture and field the new rifle. BTW I do remember the rifle had a reciprocating barrel.
Soutex, is that a Sage EBR kit ?

Again, how about we worry about the real world. Nothing past 100 meters. On a timer, controlled pairs into all targets, occasional failure drills as well (since .308 fails to stop from time to time as well, even without figuring in rounds that just miss). Single targets as well as multiple targets.
We'll see who comes out on top for both accuracy and time. Assuming you and I are of basically equal skill, I'll put my money on the M4.
---------------------------------------------------
Horsesoldier - While it isnt even an arguement that the M4 is a better CQ weapon; depending on what area of the "real world" you are in, the M14 might be just what the doctor ordered. Isnt that why it was brought out of mothballs in the first place? No QAS, lazer, or any other mudflap you can hang off of an M4 can make it what its not. Nor should it be expected that someone carrying an M14 clear a house as fast as someone with an M4. But I'd be willing to take you on firing at 8" pie plates at 100 or 200 yards. Win or loose, at worst itd be a fun day at the range.

Apologize to all, that pic is from the Vltor site........I recently acquired a SOCOM II for my agency which was then outfitted with one' r em stocks for SWAT...no pics yet but i'll try.
BTW, we use 223's and MP's in 10mm for the entry guys, the SII is for the rear guard, and I tell you, I've never had so much guys want to be RG now!!!!
All they had to do was observe its performance at the range. As for it being outdated? There just isn't another SWAT use rifle that combines reliable ergonomics and punch as this 308. And those ARE words we live by.

The M16 as a line throwing gun is crap. We are using a Resqmax as a line throwing gun, it uses compressed air and will shoot twice as far as the 16 kit would. I read a review of the Socom II and it was the first M14 style gun I did not like because of all the rails they had hung on it. :barf:

eightball its from the Estonian army I believe.
Yes it is, under the name of Precision Rifle M14-TP. TP meaning täpsuspüss (precision rifle).
http://www.sodur.com/img/TP.jpg
Optics is 2.5-10x, weight 5.8 kg (with optics, unloaded), stock is ambi, custom made IIRC, ordered from some company that isn't mentioned much.
Why does estonia use M14 and G3, other than ammo commonality amongst sweet battle rifles?
Because the US gave us a bunch of those surplus M14-s (that are reworked into the beforementioned TP standard to augment the small supply of Galil Snipers), alongside with M1911 pistols that were destroyed lately.
Worth to mention, these aren't G3 rifles, they're AK-4s, Swedish licencesed clones of G3, given as "humanitarian aid". I usually tote one around when on field training with KL. Sweds gave us also M45 SMGs and KSP 58s (FN MAGs). From Germany we got MG-3s.
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k246/musicnut_2006/m14%206/estoniaei4.jpg
These guys on the picture aren't Army guys, they're members of KL, since we use the M14 TP and AK4 as primary rifles, Army uses Galils (at least the active units, reserve might use some AK4-s). Also, in KL there isn't much of a standard sniper concept, more like designated marksman, operating in small squad, not in independent pairs.

High Planes Drifter, the rifle you are talking about is the AN-94. I cant remember the speed in burst mode, I think it was 1800 rpm. Anyways it was supossed to fire so fast the two shots from the burst leave the barrel before the shooter feels the recoil. In full auto the rifle fires the first two shots in the uber fast rate and then cycles down to a lower rate.

I've been seeing a ton of these in youtube videos soldiers download from Iraq. The old war horses seem to be getting a lot of front-line work on patrol.

This is a great thread and the M14 is a great rifles. Unfortunately this thread makes me miss my armscorp which is being rebarreled right now.
I saw some pics I have never seen before particularly of the fellow with the rifle submerged in water (looks like he has an M14 in an m14E2/M14A1 stock in the second picture.) also in the last group of pictures the with two soliders sitting down. one is wearing woodland camo and the other is wearing the old styel desert "chocolate chips" The fellow the the woodland camo has his m14in an m14E2/M14A1 stock also.
Very interesting pictures lionking, I wouldnt mind owning your M14 photo gallery.
I love seeing pictures of the M14 being used in the field.

When in during the Mid 80's our armory consisted of M-14's, M1's, several greaseguns and WW2 vintage .45's. No AR15's or Beretta's. We even had two of the fabled Tanker Garands (Springfield) in .308. The Navy got the hand-me downs for so long, they were like polyester suits in a thrift store. Now all the services cannot get enough of the M14. A great gun, a great design, not sure I could still hit it at 1000 yards but I know what gun to do it with if I were to try. I remember opening cases of TZZ .45 and was told that once the case was open, either shoot it or bring it home cause we have so much of it we are not gonna take the time to count it. That was right after the switch to the 9MM. LOL Bill

Geez, why do so many of these rifles issued to our soldiers have the wrong height scope rings?
I saw so many rifles in these pictures with rings that are totally inappropriate for the job, and unnecessarily making a not so easy rifle to scope even more difficult than it has to be.

Fantastic Thread! Thank God for these men and women serving our country and thank God for the M14.

The scope rings are as high as they are so the iron sights can be used as a back up if the scope goes down. Also many of the scopes have large bells.
