Portland Area feelers out

All,
I would like to get to know THR members in the Portland, Oregon area. I am on the West side in Hillsboro and predominantly shoot at Brown's Camp gravel pit.
I've would like to set a monthly "range session" that we could tenatively agree to go to at an agreed upon range. We could vary this range to mix it up and make it easy for those close to a particular or favorite range.
Anyone interested?
I think some friendly target shooting competitions would be just great. Of particular interest to me is making and showing a coordinated effort to keep places like Browns Camp gravel pit open by spending 15-30 minutes each trip picking up the huge amounts of brass and shotshells left laying around everywhere. I'll bring the garbage bags. I think if that if this does not occur soon, places like these will be lost, not to be returned.
There used to be some pretty good plinking areas near Lolo pass road East of Sandy that were decent, but they have been shut down by peoples' inability to pick up after themselves. Giving all shooters a bad name in the eye's of the folks that manage these areas.
And of course, if this already is happening, I would like to be put on a e-mailing list of sorts such that I can get together with folks that are way ahead of me on this.
If you own a 10mm handgun, all the better. We can help each other find the brass after it returns from orbit.

Where is brown's camp gravel pit?

Jeep: I used the are on Lolo last Saturday and it's still open. I agree that some people make it tough on the rest of us by not cleaning up after themselves.

I would show up as often as family and work would permit. I think rotating ranges/areas would be a great idea - Especially if we did some clean up every where we went. That would help spread the exposure of responsible gun owners better than just working one site.

elcaminos: I dont know if the Browns Camp gravel pit is in the same area but there's a Browns Camp which is about 15 miles or so, West of Forest Grove towards Tillamook. Might be in the same general area, but I'm not sure.

Falling: The area on Lolo Pass would take half a dozen people a full day to clean up. It's very unfortunate that people abuse that particular site, however the USFS has another site in the area but I haven't had a chance to go look at it yet...

SOG - I'm sure there are many areas that would take a lot of manhours to make presentable. If we put a dent in here and there it definitely wouldn't hurt anything.
Any suggestions for dates? I am booked for the next couple weeks, but if there is a shoot in the middle or end of October I'd be there.

I'd be all for it. I'm in SE (less than 5 minutes from the PSTC, for those that are familiar with it). But I'm up for a drive, too.
I think we ought to list out places that are good to shoot, as well as established public ranges (such as PSTC, Clark Rifles, etc.) that we are members of/have shot at that we know are good. It'd be nice to have a list of known "good" ranges in the Portland/Vancouver metro area.... I'd be up for regular trips around the Metro area to check out places, as well as to help clean up places. My work schedule is 4 on 4 off, so it changes every week.
Brown's Camp area is good, west side.
Lolo Pass I've never shot at.
I know there's a place past Estacada, but I hear it's horrible to shoot at lately due to people being horrendously unsafe.
As far as ranges go, I'm a member at PSTC, which is great for pistol, but you have to be a member for centerfire rifle (with a 25 yard line, kinda pointless tho)
Clark Rifles in Vancouver I heard is good, but I haven't been there personally.
English Pit (temporarily? closed)
Douglas Ridge ($$$)
Tri County Gun Club (???)

I've been to the Estacada area twice since I got my shotgun (I'm a new shooter and this is the only time I've shot) it's off Hwy 224 on Memaloose Rd. Basically when you cross the Memaloose bridge the whole road is stop after stop of pits and roads where people shoot. The weekends are definately crowded. Where the actual gravel pits are there are multiple groups shooting but both times we were able to find a private spot that seemed pretty safe, but I can't speak from experience.
I'd like to know about other local areas.

Have you checked out the Oregon forum at ar15.com ? We're a very active bunch and shoot together regularly. All are encouraged to join us.
Usually we do:
Practical Rifle at TCGC (http://www.tcgc.org/) (second Saturday each month)
Speed Steel at TCGC (1st Sunday) and in Albany
You don't need to be a TCGC member to shoot in these competitions.
About 4 "group shoots" a year when about 50-70 of us go to Memaloose (the place near Estacada) or Brown's Camp and basically take the place over. Full auto, SBR, silenced weapons all make a large showing. Not surprisingly, we have no problems with other shooters or unsafe dipsticks. :)
Also this year (I think in May) there was a full auto shoot in Eastern Oregon -- kinda like a Knob Creek West. I didn't go but heard it was awesome.
Often we get together for breakfast before each of the shoots.
Just letting you know about what's already out there...of course I'd be up for another shoot also.

This is a much better response than I anticipated.:D
Browns camp is located about ~20 minutes West of Hillsboro on Hwy 6 towards Tillamook. You hit the summit of the Coast range and turn left. I think it's labelled as Roger's Camp because it is the first OHV staging area just off the highway. Browns Camp proper is about 1 mile into the OHV area. You turn left off the highway, then turn right, right, cross a small wooden bridge, left, pass under some powerlines, right into the gravel pit. You are in the woods about 1 or 2 miles from the highway. It's about 175 yards to the back wall.
I really enjoy reading about how we collectively want to clean these areas up to keep them open. I was unaware that Lolo pass had any areas still left open. Last time I took a detour to plink my 45 I found them all closed off with "no shooting" signs. I'll have to go give them another look next time I go hiking on the West side of the moutain. Great views in that area.
I'm all game, but currently need to do some reloading or hit the local Bi-Mart and stock up before my next trip. I should be heading out this week, maybe Thursday or Friday, to Browns camp. My wife wants a Mauser for a hunting rifle and we plan to purchase one this week and it will need to be sighted in. Keep this thread going or PM me and I'll chime in when plans are a bit more solid.
I've been to the Memaloose Road area also, tons of places to safely shoot. The more popular ones are pretty trashy though. It is fun to go on a weekend day and here gunfire all throughout the area. I recall being there once when someone was in the valley below with what seemed like an inexhaustible amount of ammo and a tireless trigger finger.

I am always up for a good shoot. Although I wont be able to attend for awhile since all of my free time is devoted to hunting from 30 Sept. - 3 Nov.
I have never been to the place on Memaloose Road. However, if you stay on 224 and PASS the Memaloose bridge, just under 1 mile ahead off to the left side of the road, is "The Dump"
Yes, The Dump, the infamous shooting grounds of days gone by. Nice place to shoot, longest shot is only about 80 yards or so. A bunch of us used to shoot up there quite often. Back in the AK47 .net days.
Its a sweet spot worth keeping up, maybe I will post a pic or two if I can find them.
Also there are quite a few spots off of Hwy 26 heading towards the coast. but I am not sure the hunters will like people bump firing AKs while they are stalking deer out there. We are truly blessed with all of these places so close to us. Lets keep them clean.

Sounds like fun, cleaning up any sites that are used is always a good idea. I am a member of Johnson Creek Gun Club it's about 109.00 a year, card lock to enter, open everyday 8 am to 8 pm, 8 75 foot lanes, no range master self policing, near 82nd and Johnson ck. blvd. I was up near Trillun lake at muddy creek quarry to play last week, will be up again this saturday to test the spadegrips on a 1919a4, kind of a long drive to shoot but I am meeting some folks. It would great to get together with other members to shoot and clean up as long as there is enough notification for dates and times. If a list gets made put me on it.
Thanks Ron

I will put together a list and PM everyone, eventually, to get e-mails and generate a distribution list. If we can do that strictly through THR to maintain more privacy, that works too.
I will have to default til after I get off my nightshift stint however. I've been on dayshift for 11 years and now am working nights until we get some new prototype products through the factory. I'd like to put something together sooner, but I'm pretty flaky right now on commitments because I can never know when I'm going to feel good or feel like a zombie.
I'm supposed to be getting a 270 for the wife soon (awaiting arrival to ffl contact) and will head out to site it in. When it arrives, I'll try to remember to post here the night before and let everyone know what's up.
Sorry can't be more firm than that right now, but nightshift is pretty tough on me.

One more from Ore-gun's third largest city.
Been following this thread for weeks {subscribed},
but - as I drive a diesel, and diesel is now the highest price fuel
(was lowest when I bought the truck ... what kind of madness is this?!)
I don't get to PDX much.
Still, I have friends there,
so might get up your way with rifles, shotgun & handgun
and could join you for a few rounds if the timing is right... .. .

{PS: almost moved to PDX a year ago,
but after looking for a business space there for 3 months,
finding real estate to be 2X what it is elsewhere,
and getting caught up in a Friday afternoon traffic jammed exodus from the city,
(10 miles in an hour on a vehicle saturated I-5)
I thought, "What if I was living here when the SHTF
(earthquake, petrocollapse, climate change; general social collapse, criminal anarchy, etc),
and I'm trying to get out?", I decided not to move there and stayed put south of there.}

Hi all.
Count me in too. Hopefully I will be able to make it. I am 55 years old, lived in Portland all my life and used to shoot all the time when I was a teenager and into my 20's. Then marriage and raising kids got me away from it. Still married but the kids are grown. Always kept my interest in guns and when the doctor told me to quit smoking I did some research on quitting smoking and one of the methods was to reward myself for quitting. I had tried various times over the years to quit by with no luck, but had done so without rewarding myself. So this time I sat down and figured out what I really wanted and figured it was a few guns that I have always wanted. The list was an 1858 Remington, a SAA, a 22 SSA, a Winchester 92 rifle and a double barrel or pump shotgun with exposed hammers. I now own a Pietta .44 cal 1858 Remington revolver and a Taurus Gaucho .357\38spc SAA revolver. I am itching to shoot them. Next on the purchase line is a new Heritage Arms Rough Rider .22\.22 mag SAA revolver unless I can find a killer deal on a Ruger 22. The $150.00 a month that I am saving by not smoking is funding the gun purchases. Not really saving any money yet but at least it is being spent on items of value rather than literally going up in smoke. I hope I have not bored you and please let me know when you are going shooting and I will try and make it.

I'll try to suggest a calendar day, a certain saturday or sunday every month (2nd saturday of the month at noon at browns camp gravel pit for example) to allow people to just show up regardless of whether or not I can make it. It'll be a start and will fit some people's schedule to get the ball rolling, once that starts, we can adjust accordingly.
If anyone can make it on Thursdays and Fridays, please shout, I work odd days in the silicon industry.

This is the place I usually go shoot as well. Getting to the gravel pit is EASY as pie. Just go in and follow the gravel road all the way up from the highway, if the are any T sections just make a right hand turn, and you will get to it. Last time I only picked up my own brass, but there are people who go up there and pickup all the brass they can for scrap metal. I have done this at other outdoor ranges. Next time I'm bringing a shovel with me, and I'll just seperate the steel cases and shotshells from all the brass. Last time in just 15 minutes of picking up rifle brass I ended up with about 10-15 pounds. Someone stole it outta the back of my truck but oh well. I'm all for something like this. Maybe at the regular monthly shoots everyone picks up the brass and someone takes it in for ther scrap and the money goes into a fund, for whatever. Maybe for the targets for the competition, or maybe to use as donations to help keep Browns Camp open for ALL to use. At browns camp it's one of those symbiotic things. If the OHV trails close, so will the gravel pit. When I go I like to go shooting and wheeling.

I just found this thread and would like to get in on this myself. I know Brown’s Camp well and shoot there all the time. I spend more time picking brass than shooting some days. With the weather steadily improving this is the time to set up a schedule. I’m in Beaverton so let me know if anyone wants to go. There is another pit in Timber but it is access challenged and might bee a better candidate then Brown’s Camp.

I made a distro, sent it out, but no one got back to me but one or two. I plan on going to Brown's camp pit this week, probably Thursday, maybe Weds morning (I work night shift, get off early).
If anyone goes to this range this week, don't be shy, say hi, mention THR and maybe we can get this thing rolling.
Feel free to use the names listed here to try and put together plinking sessions in your respective neighborhoods. I don't expect someone in Molalla to trek all the way to Brown's camp in our current wet weather conditions considering it's 30 minutes from Hillsboro.
BTW, kudos for picking up the brass fellas. I do it to. As for the person who got it swiped from his truck, I suspect meth heads. Oh well, but still. I went out there early AM a month or two ago and two tweakers were out scrounging for brass. I was out there with 5 guns and felt a little nervous, but I did make a point to make them nonchalantly aware of my 45 on my side when I went out and setup targets. I locked the car, memorized a license plate, got a good look at them, etc before I went into the pit.
I just can't warm up to tweakers every since they stole my wife's 4-runner and destroyed it, abandoned it, and left a broken meth pipe in the back of the rig. Go figure.

As a kid we would go to the local gravel pit (southern oregon), but around here it's kinda hard to find a place.
Could you add me to the list?
Thanks,
Eric

Never too good an idea to spill onto an open forum...too many trolls
Suffice to say my interest lies in historic US military smallarms of the 20th century. My interest exceeds my budget by a good margin, however.

Milwaukie area. Go up the clackamas river to Memaloose road, lots of shooting turnouts, and I mean a lot.
As for distro, I have not visited this thread for a while. I've been out to Brown's camp area two or three times since, never an issue because I do go with others typically. Did see some methie's, I suspect, out there one morning scroungin up brass and finding mushrooms. They were harmless, but I did lock my car doors and carried my rifle out with me to setup the targets at 100yards. They never saw my pistol and I like it that way.
Also, there were two guys out there one visit that were just too nervous for their own good. I think they may have had an illegal auto or something, can't really say, but they sure watched their backside like people on the lamb from the law, it was weird. We all made sure they saw us with our 45s in holsters and kept spread out a bit.
If anyone is ever headed out to shoot, just PM folks who chime in here and we'll go from there. I'm not that into trying to form a club or anything, just meet new folks and plink. Last time we went, ??Rob509??? showed up with some really neat flipping targets. Awesome practice stuff, really put pressure on you to respond quickly. Was a pretty high dollar system that he manufactures and sells to interested agencies. It had 4 torso targets that would flip from edge on to face you. It had an electronic remote control to program it and what not. It was impressive. I'm not that much into shooting to invest in something like this, but it sure was neat and I would like to see ranges with setups like this.

The way things are shaping up, it will be another year gone by until very many get together. When the rain stops, chores, then when I want to shoot, it starts raining again. I don't mind hunting in the rain, but....

I'm headed to Browns Camp in a few hrs with a small group.
Prolly be there around noon or so, maybe a lil earlier. I like to get there early before the crowd sets in.
I can't wait till hunting season is over so I can go back to my regular place.

Needs cleaned up bad though.Wow.
I'll say.
I wonder if any shooters who go there
ever thought of carrying some plastic bags.
A rake could be handy.
And you wonder
why gun owners
get a bad rep?
The place is trashed.
Get a clue, people.

Nematocyst - you are spot on- and as a second idea -bring a first aid kit- that place is a riccochet waiting to happen. I was hit in the head by a .45 slug at just such a quarry.

Ya it's pretty sad that people are such freaking slobs. :fire:
I always pack out more than I brought in. The scrap brass alone is worth picking up.
Kinda hard to pick up crap too when there is a bunch of folk shooting.
It's not just the brass and shotgun hulls either. People bring targets and just leave them when they are done. Lazy fuggers. :cuss:
Not very cool at all.
A buddy of mine just held a trail cleanup for the Goat Mt. area by Estacada.
He said when they got to the shooting area they were not equipped to deal with all the trash & broken glass and had to leave it alone.
This is my new target stand. Makes a handy container for trash at the end of the day too.

Nice to see this thread finally getting some folks together. Another planned get together at Browns Camp Saturday, November 10th. Not sure on time just yet, but it'll be fun regardless. Bring a garbage bag or ten.

akaduck,
keep trolling around here, someone will bite. I'd suggest you start your own thread in here too. I started this thread over a year ago and have only gotten two bites. However, it does appear it's put a few other folks on the path of meeting for plinking.
I did join Cougfan2 this weekend and it was a good time. The pumpkins didn't make it. We shot some pistol, then some rifle, it was time well spent. It was this Saturday, so the range got pretty busy when I left at noon.
I have one major complaint and I truly hope the fathers of the 10 or so youngsters out there read this thread. Get some damn safety equipment. Training young boys how to be safe with firearms is great. However, training them without hearing and eye protection when you're shooting a 20 gauge shotgun and a 30-30 is despicable fellas. I champion all of you for taking the time to introduce those boys to firearms, they were obviously having a lot of fun. But please bring at least one pair of earmuffs and safety glasses for each shooter next time. When they were shooting 22s, I can forgo the earplugs, but the bigger guns, c'mon.
