HK P7M13 or M8. Reliable, safe, accurate and the BG won't figure out how to fire it.

Then Sigs, USP, Beretta. Glock only in 9mm.

If .40, Sigs or USP only.

SIG Sauer P220, P226, P225, P228 or P229 (in that order).

It depends on the job profile, for me and mine ( I made this

decision, except Glocks arn't allowed) . I chose a SIG 220 loaded

with 230GR Hydrashoks.

Buying a Glock will probably be the least expensive way to go. If you go that way I second Blue Duck's opinion.

The cheapest way to go would be a Sig Pro or S&W 915.

Unless of course we're talking LEO pricing, but those two retail for $400, while Glocks are pushing $600.

I don't see how you could go wrong with that selection.
Is cost a limitation? If so, what is the ceiling, without leather and magazines?
I like all Sigs (where is Ala Dan?) Personally, I like the Sig 220 for the .45 ACP.
I like the Berettas. Anything from the 92/96 series to the overlooked 8045 Cougar (again, a .45 ACP).
The H&K is large for my hands, though the USP family is very good, with a high price. If it wasn't for the no compact clause, I would have looked at the USP Compacts.
For Glocks, I would look at the G34/35 and the G21. I like the longer sight radius of the G34 Practical/Tactical frame. Unfortunately, Glock does not offer the .45 ACP in that frame. It comes down to caliber preference here.
I am no fan of Rugers, and don't like the politics of Bill Ruger Sr. I recognize them as a value buy though.
S&W has many options. Their new 1911 offering is intriguing. The 945 looks good also.

For a full-size: a Sig P226 in .40. But practice.

More compact choice: Sig p228 in .9mm.

H & K in those calibers are good choices too.

Beretta with 147 grain JHPs.

If you buy your own price I guess would have to be a criteria and (I'm assuming you're talking police work) cops aren't exactly rich.

Frankly, with revolvers being allowed I'd be very tempted to go with a K-frame .357 loaded up with those .38s or a regular 4" M10.

Other than that I'd probably go S&W (either a used model, considering just about all of them, or a new S&W 910).

However, you only said there are restrictions to those makers, but you say nothing about action type. If that is the case, I would possibly be tempted to spend some more and go w/ the new S&W 1911 now that they have one.

Based upon recent positive experience, I would look long and hard at the SigPro in any caliber authorized. Hard to beat on many fronts, including bang for the buck (no pun intended).

Howdy,

Well, its likely the most expensive choice you could make, outside a P7, but I'd go with the HK USP45 Compact.

Given your ammunition choices, I would have to go with a .45ACP. I'm not a fan of the 147 grain 9mm or the 180 grain .40.

I carry a USP45 Compact off-duty with Speer Gold Dot 230 grain JHP and I couldn't be happier with it. Its totally reliable, very easy to shoot well, low recoil for a .45, accurate, easy to carry, the list goes on.

You should pick whatever you are most comfortable with, but if I was making the choice, that is what I would choose.

I used to carry a SIG 220 .45 with 230 grain Hydra Shoks but then I made the choice to switch to a Beretta 92fs with 124 grain Gold Dots.
The Beretta fit my hand better and it has twice the capacity.

Tossup between HK USP in .45ACP and Sig 220. Either one with Ranger SXTs or Hydra Shocks. I like the controls on the HK, but some people don't. Nicer trigger on the Sig, IMO. So yeah, one of those.

Its pretty hard to go wrong with those choices except for the Smith semi-autos and some of those in .40. But everything else is just peachy. What is "duty" in this scenario? Is concealment an issue?

Sig P220. Don't want anything superfancy or expensive since it all gets confiscated as evidence after a shooting.

BTW, a radio would be good too so you can get the Missouri to lob a 16" HE shell at your opponent. :) Check out some of the "historical stuph" I've been posting in the black powder forum here. Lessons of gunfight applied. :D

If I need to carry, *I* pick the weapon AND load! No one else. I already have the best pick for me. Anyone has need of me armed, will make do with that, or nothing at all.

I am the responsible person. I make the decisons, all the way down to tripping the trigger. I need no self appointed "expert" to guide me.

There is far too much denial of Responsibilty and deference to "Authority" in these questions. This is why I question many behind badge, who say they will not enforce an across the board gun siezure.

Jerry

BTW, It is a Colt's 1911 in .45 ACP.

With the crappy ammo choices here I'd go with the .45 with Federal Hydrashoks.

The 9mm load sucks. The .38 load is OK but .357 makes more sense & you can't have that. The 180 .40's are the worst weight for the caliber about like the 9mm 147....well not THAT bad.

Dr.Rob
May 14, 2003, 08:15 PM
Plenty of great 9mm's on the list, but that is one sorry 9mm load.

I'd pick a .45 cal Sig.

Well, my Department has said that I will carry a S&W 4506-1 stoked with 230 gr Hydras, and that I'll like it. Well. I carry it, and...well...it works. I can't say that I have a soft spot in my heart for it, but it works like a champ.

There is a rumor (unsubstantiated thus far) that we might be going to Glock 22s...but I'm not holding my breath. Everything around here moves at a glacial pace.

If single actions are allowed, the new 1911 by S&W would be the most effective weapon on the list.

I also like the Sig 220 if you prefer a DA first shot. Its decocking mechanism is preferred to a slide mounted safety which works in the WRONG direction like walters, normal S&W's and Berettas). IMHO, there is no place for a safety that deactivates a pistol when the trigger is in the foward position. I think that the safety system on the USP can be set up like this as well.

9mm and .40 S&W can be effective calibers and if that's what I had, I would have confidence in it..... but since .45 is an option, I'd take it.

Thats a piss-poor 9mm load...If youre set on 9mm though I'd say a SIG P226 or P228...whichever fits your hand best.

My second choice would be a P229 in .40.

"Which handgun would you carry for duty?"

The SW1911 if allowed. (Great ergonomics, very shootable, and I have thousands of rounds of experience with 1911s.)

If not, either the USPc 40 or the USPc 45. (I have thousands of rounds through USPs, and find the compacts more ergonomic for me.)

I sat here pondering what I would rather carry, other than my issued Glock 23 and backup airlite .38 S&W.

A Sig 220? Had a 226 9mm at my last agency.....

P7M8? Neat, small, pointable and easy to shoot gun.

Those Walther P99's are neat....

USP? Can't like them, despite many attempts by my friend.

Beretta? Too damn big.

Ruger? Ugly. Period.

Smith and Wesson .45? Big, but intimidating.

Full-size Glock 22? Too big for my hand.

Hmmmmm....

I think I'd carry a Glock 23 with a airlite S&W .38 !!!

Many good choices listed already. I prefer Glocks for Duty guns and I like the 357 sig so the 31 would be my first choice. I like my Kimber more in some ways but Glocks make a better gun for the average cop. I would feel comfortable with any full size Glock however 9mm and up. Next on the list is the Sig 226 followed by the 220. I would take the 226 in 357 sig second choice would be 9mm.
Next choice for me would be HK's excellent USP in 45 acp. I carried this in the begining of my patrol days. Good gun.

Next choice would be Beretta's 92F.

As a police firearms instructor its hard for me to think seriously about the words duty pistol and revolver at the same time. Not saying a good officer with a revolver could not defend himself. I just feel that the auto is better for what we do.
