You know, something like the S&W 696, but in .45 acp. I'd love to get my hands on something like that.

Called the Model 44, it looks like this:

Looking at my own 696, I had considered what it took to make a similar L-Frame gun holding 5 rounds of .45 Long Colt or .45 ACP. As thin as the chamber walls are on my .44 Special 696, Smith & Wesson would have to go with a larger cylinder diameter for a gun in .451-.452 bore, which means a larger cylinder window in that L-Frame. The logistics of that are probably what kept the S&W big-bore 5-shot snubbies limited to the .44 Special. ;)

I think the Taurus 455 is going to be the closest thing to your ideal gun.
It came in 2.5" which is NLA and 4".
5 shots, moonclipped, 45 ACP...

I wonder if a 5 shot .41 mag. would work on a L-frame ? That would be

Some time ago Taurus offered a 5-shot .45 LC with short ported barell in SS and titanium, if I'm not mistaken. Don't remember the model number though...

It was much prettier than the taurus on the picture above!!! (but also could not shoot .410)

I couldn't find it in the current Taurus offerings, but knew they had made a 5-shot .45 at one time or another and discontinued it.

So you should be able to find one used, Nobody. Here's a 4" version on GunsAmerica.com for $450.00:

Another 4" Model 455, w/ported barrel:

Can anyone tell me how much the 3" .44 spl S&W 696 weighed? I can't find it anywhere on the net.

I've considered trading my 696 for a 296 or 396, , but the recoil in the latter doesn't make for a fun day at the range.

Holy Mackeral! I had no idea it was that heavy. A Mountain Gun is only 39 oz! And that's 6 shots and a 4" barrel (though tapered). Hmmm. Maybe a Taurus 455SS2 would be better in the mid 20's oz range.

325PD is close. 6 shots, 2 3/4" barrel, 22 1/2 ounces.

Ding Ding Ding!!! We have a winner! You all don't know this, but I keep coming full circle back to this one. I suppose, the only concern I have about the 325PD is bullets jumping crimp since the acp is taper crimped and not roll crimped. I've read a few accounts from reputable sources about crimp jumping in the 325. That would be a very bad thing to happen in a defensive revolver. :what:

I carry and shoot a Taurus 450 (2" barrel,17oz-45LC) and have experienced some crimp jumping with 260gr handloads, but never in a factory round.
I just had to put a heavier crimp on the 260s and the problem was solved.:)

I can easily see just making a stronger roll crimp in cartridge like .45LC would solve the problem, but I'm not clear on what you can do about crimp jumping in a taper crimp cartridge like the .45acp. It may be my mistaken impression, but I've always felt like the taper crimp used in automatic cartridges didn't have the ability to be made as strong as a roll crimp like are used in rimmed cartridges. I mean, you can put some serious crunch down on a bullet with a roll crimp.

The people who have noted crimp jumping in the 325PD have indicated it was with factory ammo from what I've read.

I've never loaded for 45ACP. That does present a problem.

Symr00, where did you find that Model 455?

On the Taurus website, use the "Gun Selector" to find revolvers and then .45ACP or .45LC or whatever flavor you would like. It will show you all their models whether discontinued or not. I will note that I have seen quite a few of their discontinued models brand new in many gun shops that carry Taurus.

Do you know if there are any other grips available for the 450 besides the Ribbers?

symr00...

I don't. Other than the fact that they're a bit bulky, I really like the Ribbers so I haven't really checked.

I haven't had any problem with mine. I've got about 3k rounds though it, mostly my handloads.

A firm grip goes a long way to minimizing the gun movement that can lead to bullet pull...

Nice shooting Joe! What range? From the rest or off hand? One hand grip or two?

JoeHatley

IIRC... that was shot at 50', off hand using both hands, double action rapid fire, 6 clips.
