I just bought a nice 1942 model 12 riot gun. CYL choke, 20 3/4 inch barrel.

I have never shot a shotgun before.

what would you suggest I feed it with? Looking for a easy recoil to start with. Lead Buck.

Welcome,Audie.

Easy recoiling and Buck are words not not often found together. Please do yourself a favor and get some 7/8 oz birdshot loads for your first range experience. Walk before running.

You have a fine shotgun, one of the best repeaters ever made..

thanks. I collect ww2 small arms and wanted either a winchester model 12 or 1897. The model 12 just stands out as a real classic.

thanks for the help...what would you think about managed recoil 00 buck?

also is No.4 less recoil than No.1 than 00, etc...or are they all about the same?

thanks.

Shot charge weights that are the same with velocities the same produce the same kick in any one shotgun, Audie. Shot size doesn't matter, even with buck.

I use R/R buck, but the grapevine has some stuff about failures to stop with it. I'd use either but I'd pattern to get the tightest in THAT shotgun. Each one is a law unto itself.

Both Model 12s and 97s are among the best fighting shotguns ever made.

Ballistic Products carries all brass hulls if you're trying for realism.

HTH....

I will use the birdshot first, then go to the RR buck, then try some regular 00...seems like the best way....build up to it.

Ok, here is a dumb question. do you shoot these like a rifle? What I mean is do you use a cheek weld and sight, or just point?

Should get to the range next weekend, if I have time.

Here is a pic. I have to take some better ones when I get my camera out.

Serial number is 952XXX matching. Swivels appear to be factory. No US martial markings on it. CYL on the barrel. locks up real tight. finish is excellent too. I have no idea if it has been refinished or what, but it does not appear to have been shot much.

Cheek weld to keep your eyes lined up with the gun, point using your upper body and the gun as a single unit.

Your eye is the rear sight. That will make sense only after you've tried it. It sounds silly until you do.

Have fun!

NICE gun!
