Just curious what is the most popular model on this board. If you have more than one, please vote on your favorite and then post with the rest.

I have a S&W 1006, a Kimber Stainless Target II and a Witness Compact. The 1006 is my favorite.

Since the poll only allows 16 options, some have been compressed or omitted. If yours falls into these categories, please specify.

Would one of you knowledgable gents, give me some idea as to the mag capacities of these beauties.

Depends, of course, on which one you get. My Kimber Stainless Target II holds 8 in the mag and one in the chamber; I think that's the lowest mag capacity for all the 10mm pistols out there, but it is a single-stack 1911. I wouldn't feel undergunned with it ,though I must admit the Glock 20 with its 15-round mag does sound mighty appealing. :D I just might spring for one of those one day...
Interesting little tidbit here: I was doing a search on the Web yesterday on the 10mm, and I came upon a thread on a discussion board that said Glock was soon going to stop making the Glock 20 due to low sales/lack of interest...and this thread was five years old. Take that for what you think it's worth, but I found it pretty encouraging, considering that the G20 is still around.

As long as I don't get my toes in the fire if I miss by a round. :)

2 rounds = American and Bond make 10mm derringers.
6 rounds = All of the smith 610 revolvers and the ruger buckeye 10mm.
7 rounds = The officer size 1911 10mm which are a very rare (Dan Wesson) or custom guns bases on an officer frame.
8 rounds = All the 1911 variants such as Colt (a dozen or so), Kimber, IMI/AMT, Wilson, Baer, Brown, single stack STI, Reeder, Auto ordinance, Parker/Wyoming Arms, etc. Plus all 6 of the smith 10mm autos. The Colt Double Eagle also took 1911 mags although it is a double action design.
10 rounds = The Witness compact line and the Bren Ten series (they may be 11 not sure) and the Glock 29
14 Rounds = Star Megastar
15 Rounds = The Glock 20 and full size Witness guns.
16 Rounds = The para Ordinance P16-40 conversions.
17 + Many of the STI and SV 10mm guns came with high caps and with mags extending out the mag well had a capacity of 20+.

There are a few carbines also just to confuse things.

I think that is it but I may have missed a few doing this off the top of my head.

pistolero...myself...my thanks !! I am considering the new (3gen) G20, with another hand full of cash for personal "upgrades" ...I like the 1911 design, but I question a factory designed 45ACP ramped up to 10mm, no offense to all the custom builds. I see KKM is making a G21(45ACP) barrel, for the 10mm as well..but again question a designed 45ACP going into the 10mm. The G20 was designed as a 10mm..and for some reason, I find comfort in that thought....gents,again my thanks.

You will probably get a lot of answers to this questions. The best I can do on a short version is that the 10mm is the balistic equavialent of the 357 magnum. You can get a lot of energy out of a bullet with a .40 dia potentialy pushed at a velocity much higher than you can push a .40 S&W.

Compare for yourself. ;) Muzzle Energy paired with velocity. A tough combination to beat in an auto.

Sorry for the ignorant question but what is so special about 10mm? Is it a lot more powerfull than 9mm? How would you rate them when compared to .45?

That is a very good question, actually.

The short an answer, as has already been described, is that the 10mm is special because it gives you the ballistic equivalent of a .357 Magnum in an auto pistol. My Glock 20 holds 15+1 rounds. Each one of them is could be a 135 gr JHP @ 1600 fps all the way up to a 200 gr JHP @ 1250 fps or a 230 gr WFNGC @ 1120 fps. As it just so happens, mine is loaded with Double Tap's excellent 180 gr Gold Dot load, with an advertised velocity of 1300 fps. This gives me a total capacity of 16 rounds, which happens to be about 2.5x the firepower of your typical .357 Magnum revolver. That is a lot of firepower for a pistol.

The 10mm Auto, like the .357 Magnum, also happens to be extremely versitile. You can get FBI-Lite level loads that match the ballistics of the .40 S&W, but usually with less recoil than a similar load in a smaller .40 S&W handgun. Or you can drive those bullets 150 to 200 fps or more faster than anything you can safely duplicate from a .40 S&W with similar barrel lengths. This is esp true when bullets of 200 gr or heavier. Most .40 loads stop at 180 gr cause it doesn't have the capacity to push anything too much heavier at a useful velocity. With the 10mm, you can go all the way up to 230 gr, which makes the 10mm Auto a useful short range hunting pistol for medium game up to the size of mule deer or black bear. If you do a lot of hiking, you can strap on a Glock 29 and have 10+1 capacity of 200 gr Hornady XTPs, which even out of the shorter barrel will usually manage 1200 fps or more, in a compact, lightweight package. This load would be an excellent choice for defense against people as well as cougars or a rogue black bear. When you get back into town, you can load a 165 gr Gold Dot out the barrel at about 1400 fps and have an excellent load for two-legged critters.

The 10mm Auto is capable of being loaded to meet or exceed everything the .45 ACP can do save for inital diameter and, in most defensive loadings, initial weight. It carries more energy, more momentum, and more sectional density, which means it is more likely to expand and holds more potential for penetration, if that is what you are after. I look at the 10mm Auto as the illegitimate love child of the .45 ACP and the .357 Magnum, because it combines .357 Magnum energies with bullets of larger diameter and heavier initial mass. It really is a great cartridge that deserves far more popularity than it has, and I find that most people who experience it first hand, really fall in love with it. The 10mm Auto has managed to form a pretty devote fan base. In fact, between you and me, sometimes it is borderlined cultish.

The Witness Compact and Bren Ten did hold 11, as you suspected. The Peregrine Falcon Voit was going to bring out was a little smaller than the Bren Ten and would have held 10.

However, I'm very surprised to see Glock in the minority here (at least with the individual posts . . I see it's up in the poll). Before I clicked into this thread I imagined 90% Glock. I didn't even know Witness came in 10mm! They need to have an infomercial on 10mm! Very impressive!

This pic is a bit dated as I've added a few more 10mms since I took it. One of the more common complaints about the 10mm is that there aren't that many guns available. I don't think most people realize just how many different 10mms models are actually out there. I've managed to pick up quite a few, but I still don't have a S&W 1026 or 1066, a Colt Double Eagle, a Sprinfield Omega or Linkless, or Kimber. There are even other more obscure 10mms out there (like the D-Max carbine for instance) but these are very hard to come by.

It's roughly the size of a 1911 Government model, give and take here and there. The grip is rather big though, but isn't far from most hicap wondernines. I have since fitted a set of Hogues to it and it cut down on the grip diameter. The fit is close to 1911 in SA, but a bit of a reach with my medium-sized hands in DA mode. Still managable.

Recoil: More brisk than .45 +p, but not by much. It does have decent muzzleblast though. It will get you attention for an autoloader when you fire it. If you frequent areas with black bear or mountain lions and want protection, you can't beat a 10mm with heavy bullet loads. McNett even has some with 220gr cast bullets for sell.

Busta Prima

Thanks a lot for the info.

Sounds like grip could be an issue. My hands aren't small but not too large either. I can grip all of the Glocks, large revos, HK's and most 1911's fine but I have trouble with double stack Sigs and certain other models. It's kind of strange because I play (some) piano and reach has never been a problem. I can reach one octave plus a key with either hand but when I was holding the Sig 229 I wanted to buy real bad, the tip of my finger sat on the corner of the trigger at a 45 degree angle. I think my hand is shaped such that it's the width of the grip gets me.

None, yet, but I'm giving serious thought to a S&W 610. I, too, had no idea there were so many 10mm out there. I knew about the 610, the Glocks, Colt, Bren 10, and S&W autos, but pretty cool that there are even more out there, and ones you can get new as well as used. I love my Kimber .45, so maybe that's my auto version? Which 1911 version do folks like best out of Colt, or Kimber?

hartzpad/Kitt-
I have the Para 16-40 Limited also. Can the conversion still fire .40 S&W? Is the capacity still 16? If so, that sure gets me thinking!

Yes, Para-Ord conversion still work and are somewhat popular. Probably the best 1911 is Dan Wesson. They started the whole 10mm 1911 resurgence with the Razorback. If I was to buy a 1911 in 10mm today, it would be theirs. Even if it was for nothing more than to thank them for starting production of it.

It's funny... Everybody I've talked to about the Para P16 conversion opts for a second barrel so they can still shoot .40 out of their gun, but in the end never use the barrel again. I think that says something right there!

Hmm, guess I have a bit of research to do this weekend on Dan Wesson's version. Always happy to support a company who keeps things alive.

Now that's an interesting idea; get a new barrel and ream that one. I take it there aren't any other changes you need to do? Will the 10mm still fit in the factory magazines? That would be pretty sweet to load up 16+1 in the Para. Guess I'll have to search eBay now; are they up there often? What are some good key words for a search? I thought eBay had banned firearms related auctions. How much was it to ream out the barrel? This is probably a much less expensive way to get into a 10mm auto. Hmm, I'm liking this idea, though my wallet might not be. :)

I went with a Scheumann Ultimatch bull barrel for a little extra weight. The factory Para mags work fine with the 10mm, but I found that if I load my ammo to 1.255" it makes it a bit easier on the thumb when loading the mag. Besides upgrading the springs you also need to be sure and have the slide stop notch cut out and install an EGW oversized firing pin stop.

Once my Dan Wesson PM sells I will be down to two 10mm pistols, my Delta Elite (had that one since I was a beginner) and my newly acquired Witness Limited. I don't have a pic of mine, but here is the EAA shot:

http://www.eaacorp.com/images/Witness-Elite/Limited.jpg

Softest shooting 10mm I have ever fired. I can do double-taps all day and it prints like a 40.

Here is an aimed rapid fire target:

http://204.184.192.200/images/lim10rf.jpg

Two magazines, 15 rounds each, firing as fast as I could recover the front sight alignment but not double-taps--perhaps two shots per second or so. The slight difference in center of impact is due to me adjusting my aim a bit. I also sped up towards the end on one magazine so the group opened a bit. Range is around 7-10m.

NordicG3K make sure the hole on you giude rod is enclosed or have it welded closed. The slide stop pin whole when open has a habit of cracking and replacements are as common as Hens teeth unless you order one from Germany

Smith and Wesson 1066
I picked it up used in 1990.
It has an action and reliability job done by Wayne Novak.

Sweetest trigger I have ever felt on a Smith and Wesson Gen 3 pistol.

Around the same time I bought a Colt Delta Elite I sold it off to a buddy about a year later.

10 rounds = The Witness compact line

My EAA Witness Compact mags hold 12 rounds, not 10.

t's funny... Everybody I've talked to about the Para P16 conversion opts for a second barrel so they can still shoot .40 out of their gun, but in the end never use the barrel again. I think that says something right there!

I've found the .40S&W in a frame large enough to take a .45 or 10mm tends to be unreliable as there is too much free space in the magazine with the shorter .40S&W rounds which often lets the mag to lose control of the round causing feed failures.

The single stack 1911 mags in 9mm or .40S&W have "rails" crimped in to prevent the shorter rounds from moving forward under recoil. This strategy doesn't work for double stacks.

As to a favorite its a toss up between my Delta Elite and Witness Elite Match. But I still shoot way more .45, 9mm and .40S&W than 10mm because the 10mm typically launches brass 25+ feet and to get above .40S&W in performance practically demands jacketed bullets which coat at least 2X what the hard cast lead do. But after a bit more reliability testing the Wintness Compact will become my car gun.

Unfortunately, I just have the Glock 20. I love 10mm and hope to add some of the others listed on the poll. Those Razorbacks are gorgeous.

Here's what I did to my G20:

(1) KKM 6" match grade barrel
(2) Glockmeister tungsten recoil rod
(3) IMSI 22-lb. recoil spring
(4) Scherer +2 Extension on magazine (that's 17+1 of Doubletap ammo in one fist)
