KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The FBI holds a citizens' academy that tries to demystify the bureau.

Citizens who pass a background check can take a 9-week course offered by the agency.

"It gives them some exposure to what an agent has to learn starting with the academy, and then progress on through the different phases of training in the FBI," said one of the academy trainers.

During the course, trainees use real firearms with live ammunition, and also train with a video program that simulates situations FBI agents might encounter.

"I think it exposes them to another facet of our training, and how firearms is a big part of our training," an FBI agent said.

Trainees learn to make decisions like when to shoot and when not to shoot, and get an explanation of what goes on behind FBI doors.

The program has been in operation since 1999. Two sessions are offered each year.

For more information, visit the Web site of the local FBI headquarters.

If I go through that, can I work on the X-Files? I've always wondered what would happen when you shoot an alien. ;)

Actually, I have been considering the county sheriff's 'Citizens Police Academy' for a while now. Anyone been through a citizens academy before? What's it like?

This would be a good experience since I'm considering SS and FBI as future careers. US Marshal service would be cool too, but I'm not edumacated enough for them :( Unfortunately, the way it's structured makes it impossible for me to participate. No way I could make it to KC from SC once a week for nine weeks, and no way I could just stay in Kansas for 9 weeks :( Oh well, it's cool that they offer it anyway. The website shows someone with an MP5. That almost makes it worth it by itself!

Citizens who pass a background check can take a 9-week course offered by the agency. The police academy is only 10 weeks in Georgia. Seems like it would be better to spend an extra week in mandate and become a peace officer.

So let me get this straight. These people shot... guns? With real ammo? And they are all still alive? They didn't murder everyone within a square mile radius?
