Why Now???

Congress can never do anything in a timely manner. Why are we bringing up the AWB now?

Do they want the voters to have a year to cool off after they renew it?

Are they afraid to bring it up close to election time?

Just getting suspicious in my old age. Congress can never get it's work done on time. I can't imagine them bringing this issue up a year out, unless they have a reason.

I can think of a couple reasons they would do such an uncharacteristic thing, but I consider myself logical so I'm not sure if you can project my reasons on Congress.

1.) If they are going to renew, they need to get well ahead of the sunset so they can transition any new restrictions to start applying before the sunset.

2.) they don't want a single day to go by when an AR-15 assembled afer 194 could have a bayonette lug on it because that would mean that they had lost ground.

3.) If this round fails they have another whole session to try and impliment another assault on the second ammendment.

Some anti staff worker somewhere probably wrote up a report on the political atmosphere which concluded that the best chance of renewal would occur if the antis had as long as possible to try to get the thing through congress. It's obvious they didn't want to bring it up before the 2002 elections. Maybe they got sidetracked, what with the Iraq situation and all. The hyopthetical report could have sailed up the food chain and been turned into strategy.

Or maybe it was just random, and the Socialists have gone looking for interesting legislation to throw on the fire now that the Iraq war is dying down.

I think KarlG hit it square on. pretty sound reasoning. now, if only our congress could think that clearly ...

The leftist extremists are desperate. They're hoping against hope they'll be able to "build momentum" over a year's time; they're also aware they made great public fools of themselves when they went into completely irrational hysterics over Smith & Wesson's new .50 caliber revolver and the Islamic sniper attacks in the Maryland and Virginia area. They've recently lost battles against shall issue laws in New Mexico, Colorado, and Minnesota, and may well lose them in Ohio and Missouri in the near future.

They're behind and falling further behind by the day, so they're throwing everything they've got into fear-mongering and disinformation.

They're going to lose in 2004.

I agree with the Wolf. They're so desparate for an issue they can sink their teeth into, they're warming it up now for the election parades. What astounds me is that the Dem Pols don't seem to understand the depth of anti-anti anger among us normal people. They're just like a self-licking ice cream cone. Let them consume themselves while we consolidate our recent gains, including the Sunset. Times are good! :D
