pardon me if this has been covered before, but why do some merchants refer to what are clearly not svd rifles as though they are? caveat emptor fer sure, but it seems as absurd as calling a camaro a corvette.

Dishonesty.
Ignorance (I would bet some of these sellers have no idea there is a real difference).
Lazyness

Could be a lot of reasons. Like any product or service the onus is on us to do our research.

Same thing as calling every 9x18mm pistol a "Makarov".

Plenty of online auction and gunshow dealers are more than happy to advertise a P-63 as a "Polish Makarov", hoping that some semi-informed person will think he's getting the famously reliable Soviet pistol instead of some random evolutionary dead-end from the Eastern Bloc.
