CO: Just called Senators Campbell and Allard

Today I called up the offices of Colorado's senators, Wayne Allard and Ben Nighthorse Campbell.

The staffer on the other end of the line at Campbell's office gave me a noncommittal 'I don't know his stance on this, call back in a few days' kind of answer.

Upon calling Allard's office, I was put on hold for approximately a minute, transfered three times, and then finally ended up on the line with a rather pleasant fellow. I asked if he knew Allard's position regarding the sunset of the law and got an answer.
It was a politician-style answer, but an answer nonetheless. Basically the staffer told me that Allard didn't want to just gloss over the thing and either repeal it or reinstate it without some sort of dialogue to find out if the law had done any good.

I, of course, voiced my concerns with the law, generally sticking with the concept of how nebulous it was, and that a person could be prosecuted as a felon for committing an obviously victimless crime. Then went on to touch on the statistics I had on hand debunking the whole thing. The staffer, a generally pleasant fellow told me at certain points that sen. Allard most likely agreed with me. After talking with him for a few minutes, he told me he'd relay my message to the senator.

Dunno if I have swayed anyone one way or the other, but at least they've heard from me.

BTW, here are their phone numbers:

Ben Nighthorse Campbell
202-224-5852

Wayne Allard
202-224-5941

My general impression is that Allard is probably on our side on this one. Campbell strikes me as being middle-of-the-road, but leaning anti. Putting a bunch of pressure on Campbell might get him to change his view.

They'll both get letters from me within the next few days—and I'm going to want to know why the Republicans aren't doing anything constructive about tax cuts and judicial nominations, too.

Called 'em 2 weeks ago.... spoke with staffers, nice people, but same non-committal answers. I guess we need to call again in a few weeks kinda stagger the input and keep on 'em.
Put 2 letters apiece to them re: AWBsunset letter drive. Will do so again every fiscal quarter till the mostrosity DIES an ugly and widely celebrated death.

Dunno if I have swayed anyone one way or the other, but at least they've heard from me

If I'm not mistaken, last time around Campbell voted for the ban, and Allard voted against it. That's one of the reasons I broke ranks with the Libertarian party and cast my vote for Allard last year.

Well, according to www.awbansunset.com Campbell voted for the ban in 1993-94, but against further restrictions proposed by Feinstein in 1998. They have no statement on him regarding renewing the ban one way or the other, but they do have him as being moderately pro gun. I think Campbell should get a big ol' helping of constituent contact in order to help him make up his mind.
