Installing a long extractor on a government 1911

I never installed a long extractor before. All I know is that they are used to direct the "flow" of brass :what: and conform to the slide to the rear. Anything special to watch out for when installing one of these?

Can you provide a link to the part in question? I am not sure I know what you are wanting to do.

Do you mean "ejector"?

Ejector, the part on the left as the slide pushes back.

Hmm, my extractors are on the right side of the gun.
Check your parts diagram.
There are long extractors for cosmetic purposes so you can blend the back end with the contour of the individual slide.
Long ejectors are to kick the empty out a fraction sooner. Is that what you mean by "flow?" (Some of them are longer on the back for individual contouring for neat appearance, too.)
Installation of an ejector is not complicated but you have to have the right size punch to drive the little pin out and back in; and a lot of replacement ejectors leave it to you to cut the pin notch for a snug fit. If you don't have a Springfield with a glued ejector, that is.

Depending on which one you get and what gun it is going in it can be really simple to install. It can also be a real pain.
Does the gun run OK now? If so consider skipping this. You will need to tune ejection angle and ejection timing if you install one. Also be aware that on most guns you will need to cut it back to nearly stock length to eject live rounds easily.
