Knife in 'Predator'

Does anyone know what model of knife was used in the move "Predator" with Arnold Swarzenneger?

The knife I am talking about was the one used in the part of the movie when the native Indian member of the squad stood on the log over the ravine when his dquad was fleeing from the Predator. He took off his vest and cut himself across the chest and waited to fight the predator mono e mono.

The reason I ask is that I have started collecting Bowie/Combat knives and ever since I was about 8 years old I wanted that futuristic-looking knife that I saw in Predator.

Anyone know what model and brand of knife it was, if its even actual knife?

$1,945!!!!

Weak...

I guess I'd have to sell 4 of my rifles to buy that knife.

Even then, I hear Jack Crain isn't very reliable and that half of the time he ends up sending the wrong knife or sending no knife at all.

Maybe I'll pick blade making as a hobby...

hmm, if you want to spend that much cash go ahead. But it probably breaks in half trying to cut an apple. If you're actually planning to put some use to it besides hanging it up as a collectable, you better search around for a real blade. I've seen real blades that look almost like it on those knife tv shows.

I've handled the Predator Bowie from Jack Crain. It is very much a usable blade and wouldn't break cutting an apple. Crain made the other survival knives in Predator and Commando as well. They are a bit pricey and are mostly kept as collectables these days. All of them very extremely usable though. And yes, Crain is very unreliable from all reports I've gathered lately. On a side note, back in the day, Frost Cutlery made a rather nice licensed repro of the Predator\Crain Bowie and it can be had for a variety of prices, but all are much less than the actual Crain piece.

Man, you had to go and post the link.

I remmeber WAAAAY back when, I saw an ad for the machette in some magazine for something like $395. STILL wish i had bought that isntead of the guitar i purchased with my birthday money at the time.

Heck, at that price i might as well buya grinder and learn how to make one like it myself.

The first knife on that page looks to me like a cold steel OSS

http://www.coldsteel.com/38ssc.html

or a black bear classic if you wanna get spendy:

http://www.coldsteel.com/14bbcj.html

minus the false edge of course. But for the money you could get a real workhorse and *tell* everybody it's the knife from predator! and with a knife that big, who's gonna argue with you? :neener:

No, I don't believe I do.

To be completely honest, about 90% of my Bowie knives I have were ordered from the home shopping network. Most of which are Frost Cutlery.

I only have about 5 high-end bowie knives and I'm not sure of the make or model (I inherited them).

Oh, man. When I saw Commando (while in my knife collecting binge) I really wanted that Life Support. 2-3 years later, when I was financially able to I was really after it but it was about the time Jack Crain was laying low for some reason and wasn't able to get one. After he resurfaced (with significant weight loss it looked like), I was at it again but research him further and found out about the iffy business practices through knife forums.

Never got the knife (but did get a couple of good ones from other manufacturers) and went on to firearms.

I have always LOVED the cold steel black bear classic - the sub-hilt design looks bad...i just never could see much use for one in my line of work.

But definetly a bad looking knife.

added: FYI they are having another parking lot sale in ventura this November 2006.

I always thought the bowie from Rambo II was cooler:

I have that exact knife except theres no black powder coating or anodizing (or whatever that is) on the middle of it, its just carbon steel.

Its really, really sharp though, just as sharp as my Katana.

I would really rather have the knife in predator though. Maybe I'll have it custom made or something, it will cost alot but it will still be alot less than Jack freaking Crain. (that guy is a scoundrel I tell you).

Didn't Crain grant a license to Frost or one of the other inexpensive knife companies to produce a replica of this?

If he did, I'm sure I would have found it buy now. I have been searching for any other source for that knife to no avail.

As I mentioned before, Frost did indeed make a licensed copy of the Predator Bowie. Shortly after the movie if I remember correctly. Some I've seen had a wall plaque and leather sheath. The Frost quality on it was WORLDS better than the current stuff they pump out. They were only done for a few years back then. One sold on E-bay about a year or so back now and closed around $695. High for a Frost piece, but it's the collectable market.
There is a Frost Piece with original display box for $700 that turned up on a google search. It's on GunsAmerica's site. They only made 500 of them it seems.

I thought they did. I guess I missed that part in your post.

As for practicality I think the knife would be too heavy to use as a machete and too big to use as a knife. A cool movie prop, though.

The Frost one is somewhat off balance to me. The custom version though had a very nice feel to it. It's size is odd though. It is a little short for an actual machete, but as a large fighter\bowie it would work. Looked good on the big screen for sure though! It ranks up there as one of my all time favorite movie knives.

If I were to get one I certainly wouldn't actually use it for utilitarian purposes. But if I did, I don't think the weight would be a problem.

I agree it would be a nice decorative piece for a collection.

Hi everybody, I came late to this thread but I thought I should chime in.

Metapotent, you´re right about not buying any knife directly from Crain, he is known to have flat out stolen the money of many clients. His scam works like this: the guy calls Crain, they have a nice friendly chat, Crain assures the customer he is gonna start working on the knife as soon as a hefty deposit is made in his account. The guy makes the deposit. Crain never answers his calls or messages again.

Like MadMercS55 said, the Crain knives are usable. Or at least as usable as any of these hollow-handled knives. You see, their construction prevents a full tang, the blade is usually soldered to the handle. Not the safest thing, if you catch my drift. Knifemaker Chris Reeve has found a way around this weakness, making his hollow-handled knives out of a single piece of steel.

But if you absolutely need to have the hollow-handled Predator knife, and don´t want to pay the premium prices at the secondary market, then you should check out Farid Knives (http://www.faridknives.com/), he makes his own versions of the Predator knives. I have never handled one of his knives, but I´ve heard their quality is good.

But for the prices he charges, you could get yourself a Busse Battle Mistress. Or two.

Hi there Metapotent. My name is Wolf's Knives. A friend mentioned to me that you are interested in obtaining a Predator Machete like the one from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. I've read some of the threads that talk about Jack Crain's custom pieces (very pricey) and the knock-off that was produced by the Frost Cutlery Company. If you're interested, I have 2 of these Frost-Crain Predator Machetes available. Both of them are unused. One of them has no serial number, but does have the black leather sheath. The other one is serial numbered, and includes the sheath, a wooden display box with a padded liner and etched metal Predator logo sign, and the original dark purple cardboard box. The display box has some minor scratches from carrying and the cardboard box has been crunched and repaired with clear packaging tape. Oh! I almost forgot. I've also got a VHS copy of the movie.

Okay, I checked out the Australian-made copy of the Predator machete. I'd like one, but the cost of international shipping exceeds the cost of the knife. Anybody here competent enough in such things to set up a group buy that would make this a little less costly for individual shipping? Are there enough other people who want one to even bother?

Mono e mono?

Thats actually more correct since only one of the combatants was a man it would be "One on One" rather than "Man to Man".

At the Field Museum I saw a crate of Trade Machettes of the type that were reshaped into headhunter swords by Islanders. After reshaping the balde they would trade gold dust for Rhino Horn to make a new handle. Now that is Bad A$$ed.
The Machettes were a lot longer than any you'd expect to see today, about as long as a Calvary Saber with dual blood grooves and a noticably curved blade. I think they were manufactured in Chicago in the 19th Century and well into the early 20th Century.

PS
I saw a security video tape of a cranked up yahoo doing his Predator imitation With one of the knock off Predator Blades at a Service Station, A cop drilled his dumb A$$, certainly couldn't blame him.
Don't take a knife to a gunfight no matter how big the knife.
Proof that Meth makes you stupid.

Don't know if anyone is still interested in the Predator Machette or not, but if you do a new google search, you will find a new 20th anniversary remake edition for between $129 and $200. Also available on ebay.
Wish I kept my Frost limited edition replica I bought shortly after the movie came out - can't find those anywhere anymore.
