HEADLINE: Mayor is accused of making gun threats
BYLINE: LINDA MAN; The Kansas City Star
BODY:
The mayor of the Cass County community of Creighton faces a June
court date on charges of threatening two residents with a handgun.
In one incident, the alleged threats were audiotaped.
Cass County prosecutors this month charged Robert Schur, 65, with
two counts of exhibiting a deadly weapon.
The allegations, as outlined in court documents:
Late on the afternoon of April 22, Schur drove to a house,
yelling obscenities. When a resident walked to Schur's pickup to see
what the trouble was, Schur picked up a handgun from the seat and
pointed it at him. Schur said that if he killed him, plenty of people
would give him an alibi.
Schur vented about 30 to 40 minutes about a variety of things,
including the resident's unkempt yard, and waved the gun around.
The resident's mother told law enforcement that she quickly
figured out what was going on and audiotaped the exchange. She
provided it to the Cass County sheriff's office as evidence.
Another resident complained that Schur drove to his home that
afternoon and threatened him.
The man told police that Schur got out of his pickup and said:
"I'm taking you down. I'm the new cop in town."
The resident told police that Schur pulled a semiautomatic
handgun from his waistband and pointed it at him. The man went
inside, and Schur drove away.
A Creighton police officer later questioned Schur by telephone,
and Schur allegedly responded: "It's true; I pointed a gun at him.
I'm sick of these ... in this town. Somebody's got to do something
about them."
Shortly afterward, Schur went to a third home, and pounded on and
kicked in the front door. No one showed up.
The Creighton officer saw Schur and arrested him. The officer
reported that Schur smelled of alcohol and slurred his speech.
Schur declined to comment Tuesday. His next court date is June
11.
Creighton is a town of about 300 people in the southeast corner
of Cass County.
