Building my own range

I would like to put in a range at my house (mainly because I can...and I do not have any range near by that I can go to)

I live in a heavly wooded area on six acres of land, with mainly farm land all around me. My thoughts would be to clear a few trees and lay them down for a back stop in sort of a U shape. Then fill in both sided of the logs with dirt and stumps and like stuff. Making the "U" 10 or so Feet thick. My question is how high do you think I should go up? 6' or 8' or 10'? Also have anyone else done this? Do you have any lessons learned to share with me, or any concerns or thoughts?

I will mostly be shooting at less than 25' away (no rifles just hand guns)

I shoot "out back" quite a bit. I just have a big pile of dirt and railroad ties to shoot my handguns into. I've never had a problem..yet. My dirt is about 5' high. I don't know what would be proper or best, just what I have.

Yes, a thought. But it is a silly one.

But perhaps you will enjoy it.

Have you seen the old movie "Fist Full of Dollars?"

The actor Eli Wallach; "Tuco Juan Benedicto Pacifico Ramierez" otherwise known as the Rat, staggers out of the desert into a gun shop, which has a convenient shooting range just out back of the store.

The two targets on the range are initially turned edge wise to the shooter, and I'm presuming that by a simple rope an pulley system the shop owner was able to pull on the rope and the target would abruptly turn to face the shooter; for a quick draw surprise.

After your skills get real good, you can try as Tuco did and draw and shoot the target edge wise! He was good! Cut that target right in half.

I recommend you replace the cigar store indian; politically sensitive, with a more appropriate one like the ever popular terrorist figures.
