AR collapsible stocks: Magpul CTR vs. VLTOR Carbine

Here's a relatively easy one. I'm sure it's been discussed ad nauseum on the "other board", but I like folks here more, and our Search engine is free. Ran the search, found a little about each, but no direct comparison.

So, Magpul CTR vs. VLTOR Carbine: same price (around 100 smackers), seem pretty similar. Is there any major difference besides aesthetics? Does the VLTOR have a better cheekweld? It's kind of hard to tell from the pics, and I haven't seen a CTR in person.

Thanks for any info,

I put a CAA CBS 6 position stock (http://www.commandarms.com/product.asp?pID=87&cID=57&c=61233) on a A2 build I am working on. Cheaper than the more expensive brands, but built for abuse. Even has an optional mag holder (worthless IMO), quick release sling swivel stud, and a cheek weld you can get for it for a few bucks extra.

I've talked to folks who are delieriously happy with their Magpul stocks though.

Do you actually have a need for something "modular"? If you think you'd have a need for some of the things you can do with the VLTOR carbine modular, then spend the extra duckettes. If not, then opt for something a bit more "simple". It doesn't need to be "tacti-cool" to get the job done.

My $.02... ;-)

I added the CAA stock to one of my ARs (my "shooter") and have loved
the angle of the built-in rubber buttpad. If I had a boatload of extra $ to
spend, I might get the VLTOR.

I think the big question here is do you need storage space? The VLTOR has battery compartments that hold 6 CR123s and a pair of ear plugs but the CTR has no storage. If you don't need it I would lean to the CTR, if you do the VLTOR. I have a VLTOR clubfoot fwiw.

I agree with the storage space question posted above.

What kind of rifle is this going on? If it's not a Colt you may have to also buy a new receiver extension.

I would also consider the weight issue, but I don't know what the new Magpul weighs.

The CAA "only" holds 4 batts, but I do have pockets. :D

The CAA does look pretty tempting for $69, complete with extension and buffer/spring. Hmmm...

How well does it hold up? Is it pretty solid, or would I notice a major difference paying the extra for the VLTOR?

The CAA I have is pretty chunky. My rifles aren't "cabinet queens" and see some decent use. Haven't had the opportunity to buttstroke anything with mine, but it's a solid unit. I certainly wouldn't be afraid to though. Not sure about the VLTOR. For all I know, it could be bulletproof.

The Magpul you mentioned above is a solid unit. I've actually shot a rifle that had one of those on there. No storage, but it'll get the job done.
