May 15, 2003, 01:01 AM
Count me in! Just don't move the date this time. :D
Sven
May 15, 2003, 01:16 AM
Date's set. Bring ammo and everything you've got... rapid-fire rimfire is allowed at the 40 yard shootin gallery.
Let's heat up some barrels and the grill.
Telperion
May 15, 2003, 01:54 AM
I'll bring my only gun (SIG P229) and plenty of ammo.
If someone's willing to get hamburger buns, I'll bring some beef patties that are in my freezer. I don't seem to be consuming them all that quickly.
Viking Warrior
May 15, 2003, 02:44 AM
Hey Sven, I will be there also..
Dont forget to bring one gallon jugs for water and poster paints..

IS the 40 yard rimfire range restricted to rifles or can we shoot pistols also?
Calvin
May 15, 2003, 10:15 AM
I'll be there. Just a hint, Hollow point or soft point bullets work better on the plastic water jugs. They make for a bigger splash.
QuarterBoreGunner
May 15, 2003, 12:18 PM
WhoooHooo! And this time I won't miss out on the water show!
45R- they allow centerfire on the tin can range, but allow rapid fire ONLY with .22.
And I don't think they have an area for bbqing; I'll have to give them a call.
Start saving your cans and plastic jugs now...
QuarterBoreGunner
May 15, 2003, 01:05 PM
Ok, I called and they do have an area with some picnic tables near the entrance, but the person I spoke to can't confirm whether they allow bbqs or not. I'll call them again tomorrow.

Thank Sven for let me know about this. I will be there too. Don't forget to bring extra boot , it is muddy at the tin can range.

Hmm... I'll be in the Bay area that weekend. I might drop by for a short while. Being the glutton for punishment that I am, maybe I'll bring my USP45 Expert as my Firearm to accompany me for Air travel (see my TSA + Gun Airport experience thread). Bigger gun than the 40F, plus it will give the TSA gents at PDX a new gun to guess at while in the ESD zone.

The tin can range at Los Altos always makes me wish for a semi-auto .22...

Dont worry I always wished for one of those evil black guns. :) We can trade for awhile. :)

This one I can make :D (unless of course my boss wants me to work at the last minute, or something breaks at the folks and has to be fixed NOW :fire:
Looking forward to this.

I can't wait to get my guns out at the shoot and really go through some ammo!

May 19, 2003, 12:14 PM
Sven- what exactly was in those bottles of tempra paint at the last shoot? Water and...?
Sven
May 19, 2003, 07:23 PM
Tempra paint is water-soluble... mix a little in each gallon jug... apply a hundred grain bullet at a couple thousand feet per second and.... voila!
Instant animated art.

I wonder if my M1A will be fixed by then. My CRV is in good working order, **IF** Springfield sends me a part in time, can I crash at someone's place?
Sven
May 19, 2003, 11:17 PM
My extra couch is spoken for by another THRer. Alas.

Do I have to be the one to bump this all the time? ;)
Who's coming?
Skunkabilly
May 29, 2003, 09:36 PM
Hey you never called me back!
Anyway Springfield doesn't have a muzzle brake right now and therefore no front sight. 10-day waiting period on the SKS won't get it to me in time :(
I guess I'm not comin' up....
Calvin
May 29, 2003, 10:32 PM
Hey Sven you going to have your M1A ready to go for blasting water? If not, you are welcome to give mine a try. See ya up there
Giant
May 29, 2003, 11:31 PM
99.99% sure I will make it this time--Mrs. Giant will also attend. firearms will probably include:
M1 Garand
1903A1
Savage 30-06 with scope
Yugo M48 7.92X57mm Mauser (with new Mojo sights)
Thompson Center semiauto .22 LR with scope
Marlin takedown semiauto .22 LR
Ruger 1950 MK I .22 LR pistol
Ruger GP 100 .38 special/357 magnum 4 inch barrel
S&W Model 60 .38 special/357 magnum 2 1/8 inch barrel
Springfield 1911A1 .45 5 inch barrel
S&W model 66? 67? .22 LR 6 inch barrel
I could bring more, but all of these in the car, with ammo included will weigh just about enough.
Mrs. Giant and I usually bring our own soft drinks and sandwich/lunch -- We're open for other ideas though. Slug guns with 100 or so rounds of Lyman cast slugs will be reserved for a future event

Sven I will have what we need. Bring water jugs.Laundry soap and orange juice containers close to the gallon size work well.So do antifreeze et. al. containers Also gallon milk jugs work but they vaporize faster.

Hey guys did we ever get confirmation about being able to have a BBQ.
1/4Bore my can killer is 100% finished and was way way ahead of schedule. My Rugers and Remington Slug guns are ready to kill some cans!!!!!
Is anyone interested in shooting slugs....I have about 30-40 rounds "laying" around? :)

I just got off the phone with the range and they DO have picnic tables and an area for a BBQ. If we're doing the grill thing, someone will have to bring a portable.
Still trying to decide what to bring to shoot, hey Sven I got my Tanker M1! This will be it's inaugural appearance. Probably bring the Rem LTR, an AR and sumpin’ else.
Maybe the M1A.

I'm still in. I used up all my burgers on Memorial day, but I'll think of something to pitch in.

For those of you who are going to be shooting at the tin can or trap ranges be sure to bring you sunscreen. Was up to the range today and the sun was shining brightley.Should be the same weather for the weekend. The pistol and 50-100 yard ranges are covered.

So what time is the fun starting? Do they have targets for sale at the range, or should I count on bringing my own?

June 6, 2003, 12:56 PM
We are starting at 9am :)
sandy4570
June 6, 2003, 01:51 PM
Sven are you going to bring your M1 carbine to the shoot? I will bring along my brass catcher so you can try.
QuarterBoreGunner
June 6, 2003, 02:18 PM
pipsqueak- they have ammo and targets for sale at the range, but bring your own if you have them. I order all my targets online from Alco Targets (http://www.alcotarget.com/). Much cheaper than buying at the range: usually $8.00 per 100 as opposed to $.50 each.
Anyone bringing a portable bbq? If not it's finger food all around. I'm in for sodas and whatever else I can scrounge out of the fridge.
Sven- that's a go on the garand and M1A; I just need to pull the scope off it- new mount and I havn't had time to zero it. I've got plenty of .308 for both (the tanker has been re-barreled to .308).
I plan on being there earlier this time, around 930 or so.
Hey all NorCali THR shooters! Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Sven
June 6, 2003, 02:38 PM
Thanks - I will bring the M1 Carbine... looking forward to the shoot. 45R and I will be there by 9AM.
$10 to shoot all day - tough to beat that deal unless you have your own land!
Here's what I look like - grab me and identify yourself at the range:

Is anyone going to bring a grill? If you are I can bring some burgers and buns (maybe some hot links and potato chips too).
Labrat told me you guys were putting another shoot together, but I hadn't looked for the thread yet. So now I see it.
We think we'll be there, but it would be a lot more fun if some socializing afterwards was on the itinerary- everyone split so quickly last time, and talking on the firing line isn't very practical for obvious reasons.

Well, I had grandiose plans to attend come heck or high water.
Disfortunately, some criminal decided that I was no longer a deserving soul, and cramped my life in a rather fundamental way.
To wit, my car was stolen 2 weeks ago. :what:
Now I am without wheels, an income, a job, or a bank account.
This circumstance has had me in a rather murderous state of mind, hence my lack of posts lately. :fire: Hard to be civil when you want to commit slaughter.
At least I still have a nice gun collection, but I may have to compromise a Primary Collecting Rule: Sell Nothing! :banghead:
Still got my hardware, (No guns in the car, thank goodness.) and a rent-free roof, but I am reduced to footitude.
Only losers ride the bus. Looks like I lost. Don't even have a friggin' picture to remember the most beat-to-crap Porsche 928 to have blood, sweat and tears imbued into it to keep it going. I was going so far as to manaufacture my own parts due to expense/lack of availability.
Some days I wonder why I even make the effort. Doesn't seem to pay to so much as get out of bed, lately.
I always knew before, but I hate rub-your-nose-in-it reminders.
Life SUCKS! :cuss: :cuss:

I too will not be attending, courtesy of a 70 year old lady that ran the stop sign at the bottom of an off ramp and wasted the whole drivers side of my work truck. Needless to say this left me in intense pain from some bruised ribs and other sprains.
I'll have to make the next one--Rob

Hey all! I finally registered!
It was great to hang out with the HighRoad crew and shoot some awesome pistols and rifles. Can't wait for the next shoot.
A special thanks to Sven for organizing, and to Quarterbore, Pipsqueak and Mr. and Mrs. MadKiwi for the shooting fun.
I too can feel the pain of some of the others in the area. I bought a 91 Mustang GT, sold my truck, and a week later a lady runs a red light and t-bones me and totals my car. The next week I got laid off! Ouch! :banghead:
I have a great bunch of friends that have been helping me through the hard times though.

Thanks for your hospitality. Katie and I enjoyed our stay on Friday. I was a pleasure watching you destroy your first set of clays.
Everyone.
The shoot was alot of fun. I appreciate everyone letting me try out their toys. The Garand was alot of fun with the SKS. I never though shooting at colored water jugs would be so fun.
Next time I will be hanging out a "little" longer. It took us 2 hours to get to Salinas but the new graduate was a happy camper.
Now come the cleaning chores. :)
Till the next time. I hope to catch up with everyone soon!!!!

Thanks, folks. Hope everyone had a good time. I'll be there for the next one.
Count on it.
Besides, I still need some help getting an as-new .45 Broomhandle Mauser broken in and running right. I'm sure a few of you locals can help with that, although I know it's an imposition to get folks to run free ammo through "you-actually-shoot-that-thing?" guns like that one. I'm such a burden sometimes. ;)
You know, right on the face of it, I have as much fun letting other people shoot my stuff (If not MORE.) as I do shooting it. Nothing compares to smearing great big smiles all over people's faces. Must be why I like to take out new shooters so much. For me, that completely offsets any sort of ammo cost and then some.
"Ammo's free today. It is the duty of all shooters to make new shooters. The best way to do that is to take people to the range and HAND THEM A GUN!"---Colin, in DSP's "Most Wanted" ;):D:)
Therefore, rest assured that ANYTHING I show up with at the range is available for the trying so long as ammo remains to run it. Free. (Although I wouldn't mind trying out YOUR stuff. :) ) And I have some pretty cool stuff, so long as you like older-flavored guns with substantially odd appearances.
Like I said. Next time. This seems to be a nice regular thing we got going, here. The lovely range that is LAR&GC helps a bunch. Makes the drive all worth it.
BTW, re: the car. I'm past the point of wishing grim cosequences on the perps, much less the world at large. That means I don't want 'em to get squished in my car because I want the durn thing BACK, preferably in one piece!
I expect I will, eventually. The car was too beat to be worth stripping. It only has 2-3 things on it worth anything, like the engine, tranny, and the right front fender. The interior was destroyed, the stereo's old junk, and if you don't know the secrets, the cooling system's going to kill the motor. THAT prospect scares me the most, as it means I may get it back in ruined condition beyond my means to easily repair it. A new/different motor might cost more than the $2100 I paid for the car in the first place.
A $2100 Porsche 928? Yup. I told you it was BEAT. Completely mystifies me WHY any car thief in his right mind would steal my car. Even with the amount of personal work I've put into it to make it a sweet drive, it couldn't be worth more than about $3000.
Oh well. Criminals aren't generally criminals 'cuz they're SMART.

My Pleasure meeting the whole crowd and ogeling everyones' accumulations... too bad I didn't get to share, or shoot anyone elses guns, but trying to shoot rimfire benchrest without windflags
and evaluating a new batch of match ammo 'ate' my range time.
Oh well, shooting .22RF cuts down the cleaning chores considerably:) = "Got Boresnake?"

Ah memories;
Beautiful day, light breeze. Getting the new Tanker Garand on paper. Confirming that yes, the scope on the M1A is canted and that elevation turns into azimuth when that happens. AR rifles are just plain fun. Finding out that 40-year-old Winchester Western .45 Match Wadcutter will function in the Kimber… barely.
And confirming that the COP .357 has one of the worst trigger pulls in existence. But it still looks really cool. Bladerunner cool. Matrix Reloaded cool. Monica Bellucci in a rubber dress cool.
Good times

Thanks, everyone... many megabytes of MPEGs and digital photos were shot and will be shared. - after serial numbers are removed from photographed weapons, of course. ;)
My face really was hurting from smiling so much after shooting those jugs of water with the M1A. Wait till you see the movie - two of them were hit at the same time - one yellow and one orange, and the explosion was incredible!
Calvin et al. and QuarterBoreGunner were extraordinarily generous - you guys were so kind to let us shoot your stuff... my non-THR friends who came to visit all commented about your generosity and wanted to thank you.
Doing this every month seems a little bit of a stretch, so I am aiming for mid-August... maybe on a Sunday... for the next shoot.
