I have contacted S&W about all my S&W fireams to get the date of manufacture. The problem is that two of the dates don't seem quite right. One seems to soon and the other to late. First is a model 547 (9mm revolver) they say was made in 1977 (too early I believe). The other is a model 686 the say was made in 1987 ( I believe I got this prior to 1987). The serial numbers are Model 547 - 19D79XX, the Model 686 - AVF13XX. My recollections may be off but I believe the 547 was inspired by FBI Miami Shootout in the 1980's. Many folks here have helped others so now I ask as well.

I have been here only a short time but have found the folks here more civil, respectable, and knowledgable than on another forum that I will not name.

I can't pin point either serial number however both the 547 and 686 were introduced in 1980.

Per the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 2 ed. on the 547 in 1983 serial number range was 17D8901 - 21D0883. On the 686 the current edition does not specificly list the "AVF" prefix but by looking at the available infomation I would guess mid to late 1987. P.T.
