CCW figures

January 5, 2003, 02:51 AM
I asked this on my own board but had few replies.

Here in PA ..... I have wondered about numbers .... pure interest. I called in to Sheriff's office and asked ... no large scale stat's but . gathered that last two months, the uptake on applications was over 100/month. If that was translated into a year . and post 9/11 at that, then for my county (pop 50,000 only), that'd mean 1,000 and more maybe, new ones.

I find that encouraging ....... but am interested to see this on a broader basis. Anyone have approx figures for their county? Or can you get them. I'd like to get some sorta assessment nation wide if possible.

P95Carry, have you checked out ??:)

I have not checked how many CCW's have been issued, but I do know that the local gunshops did not get a signifigant increase in business after 911.

I think its because people expect the Islamic terrorists to use time bombs or other such means of attack where being armed is no defense.

I havent asked about specific numbers either but when I took my class (12/01) my instuctor was swamped. I tried to take the class about a week after 9/11 and he finally found me a spot in Dec. He usually does 2 classes a month and had to start doing 3 and still had a waiting list (he couldnt do 4/month, gotta have time for the family). I was just in his shop 2 days ago and its starting to slow down but not much.

Yuck Mouth

There are probably over 600,00 concealed carry license holders in Pennsylvania by now. There is a link to a .pdf file in the article I'm linking too from last November that says there were 597,000 license holders as of 2001 from State Police statistics. I believe we have the more CCW license holders that any other state which I find suprising I always thought Texas or Florida had more. Texas has about 220,000 and Florida has about 300,000+.
We're #1!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

.More Pennsylvanians applying to buy, carry guns. (

P95Carry, have you checked out ?? Thx Scuey .. I should have mentioned that I did in fact check there some time ago .. but as to finding any statistics ... came up with zilch!

Yuck ... thx for those figures and link. I did have the impression PA was pretty well up on the list for CCW numbers . but hey 600,000 or so!! Damn, that is incredible. And IIRC, with a state polulation of - what is it now? ........ was 9 mil .. let's say 10 anyways .. that is a staggering 6%. Impressive!

In my area, concealment is I think well achieved, because I have yet to see many guys ''obviously'' packing ...... seems we have it down to a fairly fine art. Crime figures also reflect the overall status quo .. they are pretty low overall.

Here's Michigan's annual report:

Hmm .. 53,000 issued for Michigan ......... seems quite a low figure.

The 53,000 figure is for the one-year period immediately following the law going into effect on July 1, 2001. Yep, we just got our shall-issue then.

I believe part of the reason for the lower Texas numbers is the cost and time for the class and the cost for the permit. I paid around $250 for both and waited 2 months before my permit came in. And the class was 10 hours long. Here in AZ I paid $150 for the class and permit and waited 2 weeks. And the class was 16 hours long. I imagine if getting a permit was as easy as it is in PA ( not a complaint but it is easy ), a whole lot more people would get their permit.

The 600,000 figure for PA may be the number of permits they have issued since they started keeping track, rather than the number outstanding.

I had to try to get info like this a little over a year ago, and contacted as many state agencies as possible. Here's what I got back:

Idaho: 35,608
Arizona: 62,590
Alaska: ~16,000
Florida: 263,171 (increased since then, of course)
Indiana: ~320,000 (I think they're counting all issued, not all outstanding)
Kentucky: 62,000
Louisiana: 14,590 issued from 1996 to 2001
North Dakota: 5295 issued in 2000
Maine: 2375 issued in 2000
Texas: 217,000 (increased since)
West Virginia: 9284 (issued over what period?)
Virginia: 156,788

I don't know why it's so hard to get accurate numbers.

I believe there was an overall increase in gun sales and concealed weapons permits following 9-11, not because people expected the enemy to come down their street, but that the government might move to restrict our rights and freedoms making owning a firearm more difficult and self-protection from our domestic bg's harder.

Monkeyleg . many thx for that info ... it all helps and a better picture is emerging. Could well be that PA is very high on the list or even the top figure.

I recall a newspaper article about CCW in PA that gave a stat, but I can't remember what the figure was. There has to be a way to find out, though. I'll do a little digging and see what I can find out.
