High anxiety: school shootings, chaos, and the media

Last evening, my wife and I had just finished eating dinner when we heard a loud "ka-boom."

This was followed by four or five more "ka-booms," but random in their timing.

My wife grabbed our dog (the love of her life) and moved to the most central part of our house, away from the windows.

"Somebody's shooting!" she screamed.

I listened for a minute, and said, no, that was not gunfire. I looked out the back door, and saw that there were fireworks being shot off by a small college just a couple of blocks away. What the celebration was about, I don't know.

But the non-stop media coverage of school shootings and any other gun-related tragedy seems to be taking its toll. Nearly everyone seems to be on edge the last few weeks, and without any real rationale if you consider the odds of having your neighborhood shot up.

Back in 1991, my wife and I had just gone to bed when we heard a rapid succession of bangs.

She said, "sounds like someone shooting off firecrackers."

I said, "no, sounds like a submachine gun, probably 9mm."

Turns out I was right then as well: some drug dealer decided to ventilate the new Jaguar of a rival dealer who lived on our block.

Odd, isn't it, how the times have changed, and that everyone has become more fearful?

everyone has become more fearful?

Perhaps it's just me and the folks around me, but I don't see that at all.

I live about 25 miles south of LAX, and when the wind shifts, the airliners fly directly over my community. I also live about 5 miles away from a municipal airport that is quite busy.

On 9-12-01, plus several days thereafter, when all aircraft were grounded, the SILENCE was really spooky! It was strange how, after having gotten used to hearing aircraft noises for so many years, when they weren't flying it was noticeable!

Re: High anxiety: school shootings, chaos, and the media

Is it just me, or does this stuff always ramp up sharply as election time draws near? Is it just the leftist media reporting more of this stuff prior to elections?

Or is it time for the tin foil?
