Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Steve and I'm from Arizona. I just started getting into guns. So far I've just got a Glock 19, but I really want to get an AR-15 as well.

You've come to the right place.

The problem here isn't getting info, the problem in sensory overload from the hundreds of people willing to offer advice.

Hint: avoid the following topics to prevent a deluge of debate: 9mm vs. .45, AK vs AR, 1911 vs Glock, or _any_ mention of bears/snakes/mountainlions!

Welcome aboard!

-MV (who recommends a CMMG 14.5/16" mid-length AR-15, A1 sights, VLTOR adjustable Carbine stock)

Oh dear... we got a live one. ;)

Welcome aboard. The punch bowl is by the band. Please don't spike it, some of us can't drink while we CCW. The restrooms are towards the rear.

All points of view are welcome and we will supply the devil's advocate (possibly several).

cheers!

Hey bud, welcome and congrats on living in a state that allows you to own AR-15 type rifles as a citizen.

BTW claymores work best for mountain lions.

The best weapon for pumas is to pour your cold whiskey down the sink that way you will never see another puma, bear, zombie again.:D

See all the stuff you can learn at THR?!?!

DRMMRO2,

I beleive that gun was destroyed in return of the jedi.

I beleive that gun was destroyed in return of the jedi.

In demonstrating my nerd-cred, I must point out that the Death Start illustrated above was the first Death Star, which was used in the original Star Wars movie. It was also destroyed at the end of the same movie.

The second Death Star, pictured in Return of the Jedi, was operational, yet not structurally complete.

now is that a pre-ban or post-ban death star??

slugcatcher
October 12, 2006, 05:25 PM
It's a pre-ban as it was built in the 70's. It doesn't have any ebr features though(flash suppressor, bayonet lug, detachable box magazine, etc) so it is ban compliant regardless. :neener:

You'll find a range of experience and attitudes from veterans, active duty military, students, young, old, cops, plain old citizens, men, women, gun toting liberals to hard core conservatives, pink pistol members, a TV show host or two, gun mag writers and about once a year an occasional Eurotrash troll will show up to entertain all of us.

What you WON'T find is a lot of ranting, raving, rudeness and name calling.

The motto here seems to be: "We can disagree without being disagreeable".

Always try the search engine first. Odds are someone else has already asked a similar question and you'll get a faster answer. But don't be afraid to belly up to the bar and ask any question if your answer is not found. Folks here enjoy being helpful and sharing a POV and their experience.

If the folks here don't know the answer they are not shy about referencing people to other sources that can help them.

Welcome, have fun and shoot safe.

Not from Ruger, but there are Matte black finished SA revolvers out there. Not too many satin stainless jobs, though. IIRC, only the FA revolvers come in matte stainless and are not exactly "cowboys guns".

I love the new poster threads, just because we get to BS around a little more than usual-- there is no topic with which we can become OT, except for the welcoming bit!

Welcome steve, and remember you've got two ears and one mouth for a reason.. (but 10 fingers? I don't know how to reconcile this!)

Learn to love the search function. Though frankly I submit that any question not asked in a year or so could bear asking again, seeing as how people keep joining!!

rest assured nobody here at THR will punch your mom for asking a "silly" question, though art's grammaw could legitimately fist fight her. And the smart money would be on grammaw.

let's see, what else- ah. the obligatory glock shot.

Most people consider the Glock superior to the 1911 because of its polymer frame. 1911 parts require machining and precise handfitting to make an accurate and dependable gun. On a glock, you can pretty much heat any part over a cigarette lighter and reform it as needed. :neener:

Glad you're with us. I'm from Baytown(near Houston) and haven't been on board very long. Get educated every day!
I have a S&W M13 .357, Browning HP, Ruger .22 Single Six, Taurus .410/45LC,
Keltec P3AT and assorted .32 rimfires I've picked up over the years.
Good Luck.

Best mountain lion gun? Delta Force currently holds that the .31/420 is the best... 420 grain bullet at 2800 FPS - hits like a rifle... and needs the extended barrel screwed into the gun to get that extra 800 FPS. Otherwise it's all goes to muzzle flash and ear damage.
I like the older gun - the .54/770. It crawled along at about 690 FPS, but... well, if a PPK in .32 hits like a brick through a plate-glass window, the .54 hits like a semi through a mailbox. Wonderful things it can do to cinder blocks. One of my men was able to shoot his way out of a prison with one - cracked the wall all to pieces... he couldn't hear too well for the next... come to think of it, he got an honorable discharge and a cochlear implant - and he still can't hear.
Speaking of deafening guns, some idiot decided to market the biggest autoloader on earth - and hocked it to the SAS, free of charge. Since I was jointly assigned to them and Delta Force, I got a prototype. Reliable gun, came with a monster silencer. It was an .86 caliber with a 10in barrel... not exactly concealed, but it had a lot of knockdown power. Think of a 3.5 12 ga Magnum - +P++. The silencers never lasted past two magazines - when they'd suddenly just blow completely apart and rain shrapnel down on everybody.
The worst thing about the gun, aside from the fact that it was louder than Gabriel's Horn, was the fact that if you pressed the safety down too far, you put the gun in full-auto... at close to a thousand rounds per minute. Don't ever be on a wall when firing that beast - it'll blow the user off the wall.

P.S. Never, EVER use an .86 while ice skating. Yes, it is funny to watch people dance. It is not funny when you are blown onto your back, through the ice, and into the water below, losing a pistol that would retail for... $4200 at least.

The sear broke on mine. Then the slide blew apart. I was luckier than the other guys, though. One of them had the slide shoot off the rails and get him in the neck.

Back to topic - would it take a mountain lion? Yes. It would probably take a mountain, too.

Don't you know there are sick people in here that cannot withstand temptation?!?! Your thread made me look up that pic of the stainless .44mag Ruger Blackhawk and now I went out and bought one. You, my dear sir, are an enabler!!! :D
