Can anyone tell me what has changed between the Marlin 336A and the 336AS?

All I have found on current Marlins are:

336A 336W 336C and 336SS: .30-30 Win., cut checkering, 20" barrels,
6 shot full-length magazines, Micro-Groove Rifling (12 grooves).

336A Hardwood stock, forearm end cap, studs for detachable sling
336W Hardwood stock, forearm barrel band, sling swivels and padded nylon sling
336C Black walnut stock, black cap on pistol grip, fluted comb, forearm barrel band,
studs for detachable sling, also available in .35 Rem.
336SS is stainless steel version of the .30-30 336C

The 336A and 336W are the plain-jane budget chain store models.

If you follow Marlin's current model scheme, a 336AS would be a
336A in stainless steel.

The one I saw at Sportsmans Warehouse had a blued finish. Wait, it might just be the 336A with a scope.

That could be Sportsman Warehouse's internal code for 336A with scope
added by them.

The 336 AS has the rifle fore end and a birch stock. Only available in 30-30I am pretty sure the 's' designation means it has the lever disconnect.
