I'd be interested in thoughts and comments of anyone who owns one of the CMP Kimber .22 rifles. I'm considering one for use by both myself and my grandson. Thanks in advance to all.

A friend has one that is very nice; accurate and attractive, as target rifles go. True, he went to the South Store and picked out one that had a walnut stock with some grain and without the boxcutter scar from when they slashed open the bags for "inventory."
I would expect a luck of the draw rifle with mung wood stock and a cut mark to still shoot well. They are all brand new.

I have read that parts will be an issue with those Kimbers. For the money it has been mentioned that a used Anchutz might be a better way to go as far as any future support goes. Just a thought.

Long time CMP member, not a first time poster.
For what the Government originally paid for the rifles, I feel the CMP may have these a bit over priced for what you are getting. JMHO

For an aperture sighted target rifle I think these are a better buy.

I bought one and couldn't be happier. Great trigger, good sights. and will shoot smaller groups than I am capable of all day long.

I had purchased one mid year at the North Store. The sample I found had just a very light cut on the side of the buttstock parallel with the grain so is a little hard to discern if you're not looking for it. Barrel is .980" cylinder. Stock is big and heavy. Aussie peeps which are themselves a very good value. Only a couple very small light scratches on the bottom of the barrel just in front of the stock forearm. Adjustable buttplates, adjustable trigger, handstop rail, handstop with quick detach sling loop.

An excellent gun for adult position shooting, IMO. ½" @ 50 yds with Wolf Match Extra and a scope is no problem for my sample. Out of all of the .22 lr single shots I have, it is the one that has no problem with just dropping the round onto the ramp pointed in the right general direction and push the bolt foward and chamber. The deep funneling groove in the receiver allows the ammo to align itself to feed correctly. The others need to have the round positioned close and pointed straight to go in.

If using a large objective scope, the mid dovetail mount on the barrel may have to be removed (it is screwed into the barrel). Trigger is simple to adjust. Safety is easy to reach and manipulate.

At 10¾ lbs, it will be a little too heavy for youngsters for standing and could be straining for sitting/kneeling and prone. Great for benching.
